    Pop!

So my new graphics card arrived today Browsing at 640X480 - best GFX for a Asus P5K board... - wasted no time ripping out my old Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB and replacing it with the budget alternative, the HD4850 512MB.

Plugged it in, checked the seating, checked the cables, connected the kettle cord, flicked the switch on the PSU. (wait, was that a slight pop I heard?) Motherboard green light. Check. No GFX warning red light. Check.

    Press the power button. Nothing.

    Crap.

Take out the HD4850 512MB, put the 8800GTS back in. Cables. Lights. Power button. Nothing.

    Crap.

Lights are on so the PSU is fine. Would also indicate the MB is okay, although it's possible the PCI-E slot blew. I'm left with the GFX, but I'm willing to discount as the 8800GTS should have worked once re-inserted or the CPU.

Anyone care to offer an educated guess?

I'd take issue with this assumption. The bits of the PSU that power the lights are fine. Other bits of it could be fried, though. I'd see if I could get hold of a spare PSU from someone and give it a go.

Although it sounds most likely to be mobo to me - I've had several second hand mobos that have had all the lights glow nicely but just haven't booted...

    Re: Pop!

I've got a crappy PSU downstairs which will do long enough to test it.....is there any other way to test the motherboard?

Unfortunately the other machine in the house won't take a PCI-E card so I can just run it through that one.

    Re: Pop!

It wasn't the board, the PSU, or the CPU.

It was a little blue cap from a bridge just below the PCI-E slot. I'd seen it lying on the floor yesterday morning, put it one side and figured I'd try it in a few different places on the board to see I had any luck. Third try and the thing powers up! Very suprised doesn't come close.

So now I'm up and running, my HD4850 is whirring away quietly and I'm not longer browsing at 640x480. Vive la résistance!!

    Thanks for the help.
