Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Upgraded today to a new cpu, mobo, case. Plugged everything in and it turns on and i can even get into windows although it defaults to analogue and then shuts down. Fine, I figure. expected.
I try to reinstall windows and the dvd drive seems to be dead. the light on it goes on when I press the button so it's not dead... But it won't open and the light goes off pretty soon. Help?

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
What parts did you get in the end?

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Athlon x3 was £60 from scan. And the MSI E51.
But why doesn't the dvd drive work :(

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
I would try running the RAM at 1333MHZ using loose timings.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
To fix the dvd drive? My ram will do 1600mhz cas 6. It\'s not that the pc freezes, it\'s just that the drive won\'t open!

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Maybe the drive is jammed? have you tried to open it with a paper clip?

I thought you said that the PC crashed when it enters windows? The C3 stepping Athlon II processors support DDR3 at 1600MHZ officially although the C2 stepping CPUs only support DDR3 at 1333MHZ officially.
Also it seems like the disc maybe stuck in the drive. You might need to unjam it:

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
If the dvd drive is stuffed then so be it. How do I get the pc to display an image onto the Monitor though?
-
Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
I think it tries to init through the onboard first although its a bios setting which you can force either way, although it should auto detect

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Can you get into BIOS? Have you tried only using one RAM stick??
Also it maybe worth trying a PS2 keyboard instead of a USB one as I had a motherboard once which would not boot due to this!
If you are in the BIOS it will display an image on the monitor. Alternatively you could try something like Damn Small Linux which will run off a USB stick.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
I can't get into bios. Sigh. This is so depressing, what have I done to deserve this. I would prefer it if it just didn't tun on at all.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
So basically the computer turns on and you have no display on the monitor?
Like,I said try one RAM stick and alternate it between the slots.
Also try a PS2 keyboard instead of a USB as I mentioned earlier.
Perhaps even clearing the BIOS may help.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
I have a PS2 keyboard. I'll much about with Ram now. :'( I actually feel like crying. Build took me about 5 hours as the antec p180 mini was ridiculously hard to get neat and I'm a neat freak. I managed it and it looks great. Except you can't turn it on. :(

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
yep, keep taking out components until something happens. I take it there are no beeps? can you hear it post? d
actually: did you put in the additional power into the mobo?

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Have you tried unplugging all of the drives too??
-
Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Yeah i took out 1 module and I'm into bios. There is 1 beep, it shows the splash screen then anotehr beep and it gives me f1 f2 and a badchecksum thing. Obviously windows is broken, no problem but I cant boot from DVD... It wont let me.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Ok, the dvd drive is broken. Weird. But k. Im on the pc now and it doesn't recognise that the drive is a dvd drive or that there's a disk in - this is with me putting the disk in manually - so I'll order a new one. I guess.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
damn. although, if you have another dvd unit (laptop etc) you can install 7 from usb
edit: if you have a big enough usb thingy :P

if you've got a spare pc and at least a 4gb flash drive you can create a bootable usb to install windows from while you wait for the new dvd drive. good guide here

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
Dvd drive is not stuffed. Just inconsistent it would seem. Mucking about at the moment but If I'm getting an SSD within a couple of weeks I might just wait till then.

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
has the mobo got SB710? I had a couple of issues with mine - it wouldn't recognise the DVD drive if it was open during boot... so perhaps your DVD drive was stuck a bit open so it wasn't registering or something? *shrug* Unusual set of problems... although I'm not entirely surprised that windows didn't boot given such a big change of components (swapping a motherboard and CPU will often end up needing a new install, ime...)

Re: Upgrade causes random problems. help!
It did boot but won't any more. totally fine, but I need to reinstall windows which I can't. Sigh.
