Yeah I managed to get it to work with a 3.5" IDE and usb adapter kit (its what I had at the time)! I had to try a couple of times before it would copy to the drive correctly.
it's a USB drive so hopefully it will work. However, formatting a 500gb usb drive isn't fun.
It wasn't this guide but it used the same utilities (diskpart).

Why don't you just make a smaller partition? And do a quick format as well.

It's at like 95% now so I'll let it finish. And I have no knowledge of HDDs at all. how do you make the partition smaller, I'm following an online guide.
I used something like:
Create Partition
Select partition
clean
format fs=NTFS

I'm using this guide. Just used the cmd BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 G:
I get an error message. I think it;s the fact that I'm trying to put 64bit win7 onto dvd using a 32bit OS. That seems to be what it is suggesting. Any advice?
Edit: seemed to just be a warning. Copying win7 over to disk now. We'll see if it works or not I guess! Nope, so I am back to square one.

If you use computer management --> disk management to make the partition, you can select how big you want it to be.
Since the install is only 3GB or so, there's no need to format an entire 500GB partition or whatever.
And yes, I can well believe that it's not possible to run the 64-bit executable on your 32-bit OS. You'll either have to do the operation on a 64-bit OS or install the 32-bit version of windows onto the usb disk.

I thought it might not be an issue seeing as I'm only using the 32 bit OS in order to copy the dvd contents to the drive - I was wrong. Oh well, I'm jst going to wait for a DVD drive then. SIgh.
The copying bit is fine, it's when you're trying to run the bootsect executable that you'll run into problems, as I understand it.
Yeah, oh well. My dad's friend had an external dvd drive I could borrow so installing now
