    'Short' CPU cooler

I picked up a bargain Q9400 on ebay to replace my ageing E6750, which should mean that my current system can hold out until Ivy bridge (or at least until Sandy bridge gets a price drop). However my E6750 is overclocked to 3.2GHz, and I want to try and hit the same speed with the Q9400 so that I don't lose any performance in single threaded apps.

However, my case is a touch narrow, so I can't use full height coolers in it. At the moment I have a Xigmatek HDT-SD964 which has worked very well with my E6750, (although being a 92mm fan it does get a bit loud under load).

Should I keep the same cooler for the Q9400, or am I going to need something more capable for the quad core? If so, what good coolers are there that are 133mm (the height of the 964) or shorter?

    PS:
I know the sensible thing to do would be to try 964 and see what the temps are like, the problem is that its a push-pin cooler, which is PITA to fit and remove.

    Re: 'Short' CPU cooler

    There's this: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Noctu...AM3-HTPC-Ready

It is 125mm tall so should fit OK. I have had it in my SFF for a while now cooling an overlocked i7 920 and it does admirably considering how quiet it is.

However, due to the voltage differences between the 6000 series and 9000 series you may find you get better performance off your existing cooler with the 45nm quad than the 65nm dual core. I found this as I have another PC which I upgraded from an E6850 which ran at 3.96GHz at 1.45V (at 60C) to a Q8300 which ran at 3.6GHz at 1.285V at 53C, so the lower voltages of the 45nm parts was more significant than the extra cores.

Ultimately, the existing cooler should be fine but you may get quieter operation with the one linked above.

What's your budget? Since this way I can simply say "Corsair H50/70" and there, top-notch cooling with barely a few centimetres in height

Scythe Mini Ninja, fits in my Antec Fusion OK, so it's just a touch taller than a full height PCI card.

    Re: 'Short' CPU cooler

Thanks guys, (I'll be hitting the thanks button later on when not on my phone!).

My budget is max £40, preferably lower. I would have thought the quad would be hotter, as its 95W TDP rather than 65W of the E6750, but maybe I've misunderstood the numbers!

The E6750 was a dream to overclock (I actually undervolted it a bit as it was completely stable, I didn't need anymore speed, but the temps were a bit high). I'm hoping this chip will be half as easy!

I remember seeing a website somewhere that had a league table of all of the various HSF's with noise and cooling performance on various fan settings. Anyone know of a website like that?

You might be referring to Frosty Tech.

Yes the thing you have to remember about the core2quad is that it's just two seperate core2duo's under the heat spreader.

The die shrinkage lowers the voltage needs and thus the heat produced.

The other issue is the general air flow in the case and the overall case layout.

Personally I doubt there will be a great amount of difference between your Xigmatek HDT-SD964 and that noctuna, they are both 92mm fan based tower coolers

The scythe Zipzang 2 and mini ninja are well rated

However they have issues in that they use push pins and the heat fins over hang them, so you really need to get the motherboard out of the case to fit them.

generally speaking I'd say fitting the heat sink out of the case is best anyway.

If the push pins are really giving your trouble inside your case then you can just get a bolt through kit (eg the ximgatek crossbow) then you just remove the pushpins from the cooler and bolt it in instead.
However unless you've got a big hole in the back of the motherboard tray you'll need to take the motherboard out of the case anyway.

    Re: 'Short' CPU cooler

Frostytech seems to rate my current HSF pretty highly (I have no idea how reliable Frostytech is, but I don't have any knowledge of another source) so I think I'll probably just stick with it for now and make sure my next build is in a case large enough for a full tower to accomadate a larger, quieter fan.

If I'm going to be taking my motherboard out (and you're right, I'll probably need to) then I may as well have a go at improving my cabling, as its a bit of a mess. Any good websites or tips on efficient cabling? (I haven't made it easy on myself with a cheap case with no holes in the motherboard tray and a non-modular PSU!).

    Re: 'Short' CPU cooler

The Scythe Zipang 2 is a very capable heatsink, but I don't know the price and couldn't find it in the few UK e-tailers I know - you might want to check it out, if you decide to upgrade after all.
