New "King of Netbooks"?

Think the new EeePC looks interesting - potential for some light gaming perhaps? The ION2 gfx has 16 cores@ 1.2Ghz, so should be roughly equiv to the GT310 found on some CULV systems.

I'm sure someone will chime in with "this isn't a real netbook...etc" - but as it's small, light and has long battery life I think that ticks most of the boxes for a netbook. Granted, it'll probably cost twice what the cheapest one will cost.

ISTR the graphics on the ION2 is hung off a PCIe x1 interface and so slower than the original ION, which is a real shame as otherwise that would be a very nice package.

I shall wait with interest to see what the AMD Bobcat based Fusion chip can do, only a few months to wait for it. Hopefully Acer will do a netbook worthy of the Ferrari badge with that one!

The 18W Zacate seems to be 80 dx11 shaders at 500MHz coupled with a dual core 1.6GHz out of order CPU.

I would guess from those stats it would be ballpark with the ASUS UL30Vf in your list? Time will tell.

That can't be far off the old Ferrari 11inch netbook in terms of thermals, but sounds like it should have better idle power and hence battery life.

There will also be a 9W variant, but not seen and hints to what they are clocking that one at.

The 2nd link you posted is an interesting read. AMD bringing integrated gfx to the entry level notebooks can be no bad thing.

I think the really interesting thing is not the GPU performance Ontario/Zacate will have against Core iX's graphics: after all, Intel's Sandy Bridge graphics is meant to be getting an approx 2x performance boost compared to the current generation HD Graphics. It's that this is the bottom end of AMD's APU plans: Llano, and presumably the following Bulldozer-based APUs, will be getting a 480 shader iGPU - that's 5 times as many as Ontario / Zacate!
