Kalniel finally upgrades.. (RAM/dividers) question
.. or at least, I'm beginning the process, taking advantage of price drops to clear inventory prior to next year's chips.
So I've picked up an i7 950 and Gigabyte X58 UD3R rev 2.0.
Next job - RAM. So does anyone know the memory dividers offered by the above motherboard?
I'm hoping to run RAM at around 1333mhz, but wonder if I should get 1600 if dividers don't allow me to run close to that so needing to run higher.
Re: Kalniel finally upgrades.. (RAM/dividers) question
I dont think theres a huge difference in price so I would just get the 1600 and tighten up the timings if you run it slower. Atleast that way you have the option. Also depends what sort of OC your aiming for?

Re: Kalniel finally upgrades.. (RAM/dividers) question
Well I'm aiming to keep cool n quiet Intel's power saving options on, so any voltage increases will be offsets only. Still, I don't think the 950 is a fantastic overclocker but the high multiplier means I don't really need much from the RAM.
A sensible start (when I need it) would be something like a 166mhz cpu clock, which might be fine on stock voltage and only require 1333mhz RAM. Problem is most of the 1600 modules have XMP settings for 1600 but not 1333, or have rather poor defaults at 1333. I don't mind setting it all manually, but it'd be nice not to have to worry about it :p

Thinks Kalniel's I7 950 cost more than Maverick77_uk's entire new build! Gotta keep cranking that Sempron 2500!........

Congrats on the path to an upgrade :)
950 nice! Not waiting for the lower power Intel chips then?
Does that mean you don't want your x2 4400 anymore ;) - kidding, must upgrade mine but cash shortage means the kids' pc takes priority.

The current market price for the 4400 and other bits in the current computer could subsidise the new build quite nicely... but sadly someone else wants the computer so it's going to an easy retirement of web browsing and emailing :p
Was very tempted to wait, but I think I needed the x58 platform in terms of connectivity.

Knowing you mate, yup! Do you want a x1950xt? If you've got a reliable graphics card to swap it for I'd be happy to - as noted above, it doesn't need to be powerful.
