i5 CPU/mobo compatibility
Hello,
I'm about to build a Win7 work system to run Visual Studio 2010. The key requirements are that it's fast, and costs under £500. Graphics card not necessary.
I was looking at the i5 760 QuadCore:

And the Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H Intel H55 Express 1156:

The motherboard looks ideal in terms of its price, and has onboard graphics.. but is it ok with that processor? They're both socket 1156, but I notice it's listed under the "Clarkdale" series rather than the "Lynnfield" series (which the CPU is). I'll be honest, I don't really understand the difference, and need to know if they will work together.
Thanks.

*BUT*
If you use an i5 760 in a H55 motherboard you will *not* have integrated graphics. The graphics core is on the CPU die for socket 1156 CPUs, and the i5 760 doesn't have a graphics core. There is no motherboard for socket 1156 that has onboard graphics in the traditional sense, so if you're going with an i5 760 would will need a basic discrete graphics card too.
p.s. to be a little more useful - if you're thinking about the i5 760 then why not consider a Phenom II X6 1055T. Pick a decent 880G-based AM3 motherboard and you're off :D I currently run VS 2005 and SQL Server 2K8 on top of Window 2008 Web Server edition on essentially a 2.5GHz Phenom II Quad core and it runs beautifully, so any Phenom II X4 or X6 should be good for you (I suggested the 1055T because it's about the same price as the i5 760 ;) ).
Re: i5 CPU/mobo compatibility
Correct, what he said, get a GPU.
Re: i5 CPU/mobo compatibility
Thanks.. would never have known about that issue.
ok, going down the AMD route.. how about these 2 together?
AMD CPU Phenom II 955 Black Quad Core Processor

Asus M4A88T-M AMD 880G AM3 Motherboard

I know they won't be cutting edge, but they should be more than good enough for what I need, and cheap!
Re: i5 CPU/mobo compatibility
Yup, good combination that. Better set up than my work machine, certainly. You'll want *at least* 4GB of RAM to go with them, but once that's bought you're good to go :D
