Question Whats this slot I have on my laptop ?

I have this kind of slot on the side of my laptop, when I push it releases a plastic slide so I take it I can install some kind of device in the side of it. Any idea on what it is called, as my Wifi signal is real bad and I am guessing I cant install a Wifi card in its slot but I wantt to make sure I order the right size etc

    Thanks so much !

If you click this link and select the last picture in view on the page it will show the slot I am talking about http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home...s=ukdhs1&s=dhs

That would be an express card slot, an express card 54 to be precise.

There are tons of different cards you can plug in to it, a WiFi card would be one of them.

Re: Whats this slot I have on my laptop ?

going by the tech specs, I'd guess it's
    1 ExpressCard 54mm Slot
According to Wikipedia, it should accept any 34mm or 54mm ExpressCard

EDIT: meh, beaten to it by DDY. Well done mate

PCMCIA is the predecessor of express card (check out the wiki page), think of PCMCIA as a miniaturised PCI slot and express card as a miniaturised PCIe slot.

Also, no wifi express cards on Amazon?! Are you typing it in right?

On a separate note jamieuk23, have you considered upgrading the mini PCIe wireless card or internal antennas? The former is very easy to do, just open up the bottom panel, the latter is a little bit more complicated and requires access to the back of the screen.
