    I thought Maxtor and Seagate were one and the same now? Or is that wrong?

    As for the OP, if it's 7200rpm, it will be quick. Only other thing to check is that the drive has 500GB+ platters, and then you're away, which is easily done through google.

    Difference between brands is pretty marginal if those vital specs are the same.

    Your quite correct, they are. My 500 Gig drive in my PC at the moment is branded Maxtor, but when you run tests on the drive it identifies itself as a Seagate.

    I think changing the hard drive on an iMac involves removing the cover glass. I'd rather go for a NAS.

    Ha well my Maxtor that thought it was a Seagate just died this morning. It's been since returned to where I got it from for a refund.
