700 Notes - Gaming Build
I know I posted a thread a couple of months ago, but decided to wait till my contract finished and it was a little closer to COD BO.
Looking at building in the next week or two whilst I have the money.
This is what I have come up with so far.
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4198/johnbuild.jpg
Im open to any suggestions regarding AMD/ATI : Nvidia/Intel combos and vica versa.
Its purely for gaming.
PS: Im moving to malta in Jan so the case needs to be small enough to not make the journy there a nightmare :)
Thanks all.
:woowoo:

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
personal thoughts: don't get that case - poor reviews it's ugly imo too. If you want something small but good then have a look at an antec 300, or uATX an antec P180 mini (which I have, yes). Save a tenner on the RAM and get cas 8 or 9 (there is no difference in the real world) and spend that tenner on a 6 core 1055T. You sorted for a CPU cooler and HD?
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Ive got a 500gb Spinpoint from the rig im on now. Its 4 years old, but no probs so far with it. Not sorted for a cooler. Should I get an aftermarket cooler if im not overclocking just yet?

You could reuse your arctic freezer?

It would fit fine? Despite it being so old?

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
I think AMD mounting brackets have been the same for ages... is it a clip or a backplate job?
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
I would try and get a 5850 for less than £200. Froogle just priced the card at 207 on ebuyer. (losing my mind btw).
I would be quite tempted to get an i3 and overclock it to about 4ghz. Bit tech net has an okay guide on this. Like you said its only for gaming so you don't need too many cores.
What res are you using btw; a 460 768mb at ca £120 would be my choice on a 17" crt.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
the artic freezer is no better than the AMD stock heatsink iirc. Oooops double post.
If you have to go AMD get a 955 or an athlon x3. It wrong to me to be paying almost three times the cost of the board on a CPU.

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
I dont have to go anything. Im open to intel ideas also. Im using a 2405FPW atm, but changing to a 22/23" HD monitor at xmas time.
I could go for a cheaper CPU and overclock, but ive not overclocked for years and even then it was very basic. So prob happier to spend extra to get the clock instead.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
I would still go for the 1055T. You'll easily learn to OC it to 3.5GHz, probably won't even need to up the vcore.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
The HD6000 series is coming out next month AFAIK.
I would get the following build:
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition ~ £109
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
With stock cooler and stock voltages you should be able to get upto the speed of a Phenom II X4 965BE or 975BE. OTH, a mATX motherboard won't be as good for overclocking as a full ATX motherboard due to limitations on the VRM cooling.
Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H ~ £82
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
OR
MSI 880GMA-E45 ~ £73
http://www.scan.co.uk/TodayOnly/Index.aspx
Both motherboards have the HD4250 IGP, SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0 ports.
Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit ~ £72
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/234975
OR
Corsair Memory Dominator 4GB DDR3 PC3-12800 ~ £79
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-%...X-18v%28AMD%29
If you are not overclocking run the RAM at 1333MHZ using low latencies.
Antec Mini P180 ~ £62
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Antec...plus120mm-fans
OR
NZXT Vulcan ~ £54
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/NZXT-...USB-20-w-o-PSU
Antec TruePower New 650W ~ £76
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159920
The total comes to around £384 to £408.

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Alright so Ram sorted. Gone for Cas 9. CPu going for 1055T.
Is the mobo a good enough choice? And psu?
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
TBH I agree with CAT. Get that stuff and then wait for 6770/6750 (or if it's rubbish then go for a 5850). The P180 mini is gorgeous
That PSU that CAT linked to is a great price.

PSU is included there?
Just card needed. Go for uATX, it's just so much cooler :D

Sorry, ur right. It is. Only prob being, i will have to wait for the new GPUs to come out before I can build :(
Mr patience :juggle:

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
4gb 1333mhz ram at a draw dropping £40 Aparently there are going to be ram price drops very soon.

The OP could have 8GB of 1333MHZ RAM in the build I suggested earlier for the same price for 4GB of 1600MHZ DDR3!

So hit that ram from oyyyy instead then?
What gfx card you suggesting CAT?
I want the build done before NOV. And im gonna assume the 6000HD's will be out my price range anyway on first release?
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
I think the 6750 end up costing roughly what the 460 does now with the 6770 sitting where the 5850 is.
I always get these things wrong.

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
I would check that the RAM has no issues with the motherboards I have suggested. Asus also do a nice mATX 880G based motherboard too for around £80:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/206150
The 1600MHZ RAM probably will be better for higher overclocks but TBH with the unlocked multiplier on the 955BE 1333MHZ DDR3 should be fine IMHO. If you are going for a mATX motherboard anyway you tend to have more limited overclocking ability.
I would also check the NZXT Vulcan I suggested:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NZXT/Vulcan/
The mini-P180 is a prettier and better built case but is very heavy. The NZXT Vulcan is more of a LAN case and even comes with a handle.
The 880G based motherboards come with an IGP so you could use this until the new graphics cards are released.
ATM,I would not pay more than around £200 for an HD5850 1GB. The GTX460 1GB can be had for around £170 and is also worth looking at too. Supposedly, the HD6000 will have improved tessellation performance over the HD5000 series.

cheers CAT.
I will check out any probs with that ram, but does seem like a bargain. Im more than happy with the mini-P180. Anything smaller than my Wavemaster is a bonus. Not a big fan of the bling on the vulcan but cheers.
Im building mainly for the new call of duty and medal of honor thats coming out so will need a card before the 9th Nov.

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Check the dimensions of the P180 mini - it is fairly heavy, and it's a bit larger than I expected, only a bit smaller than my admittedly small antec 300. AMD 6000 series should be out in october, try to get one at launch though or it might be stock shortage for the next 3 months as usually is the case.

Thanks nibbler. Looks like ill be waiting then as October is fine for me. Is there any news on pricing and performance yet or is it too early?
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Too Early. October is my best guess tbh, Ask around.
Price is unknown I think, but performance wise, the 6770 is supposed to use less power than a 5850 but be around as powerful I believe.

I dont really care too much about power consumption as long as my psu can handle it :). But for around the 200 mark, there will be a HD 6000 card that will perform better than the 5850?
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Would be a pure guess if I said yes.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Sorry to Op for a little thread hijack, but it is regarding the 6000 series card. i have found this article
http://www.techeye.net/chips/amd-pos...radeon-hd-6000
It states the cards being delayed til november. Now i dont know how reputable this website is (found it through google), but if it is true it could impact his decision to buy now or wait.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Personally I wouldn't wait, I'd just get the best card you can afford now (or whenever you plan to get it), I always found waiting for something often ends up with the thing being higher priced or poorer performing than expected.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Couple of things on the ACf7rev2, AFAIK it's exactly the same cooler as the ACf7pro or ACf64pro
The only difference is they now use a multi socket mounting system instead of producing different coolers for different sockets and they've improved the fan.
Same heat pipe size and position, same fin area, spaceing and number.
Oh and slightly more expensive
(strangely enough I've yet to see a review where the original is pitted up against the rev2)
It's still a decent cooler, but it's just not as good or as cheap as it once was and the competition is making cheaper better coolers now)
If you go with the NZXT Vulcan then stick with your current ACf64pro (if you go with and AMD system) as I'm pretty sure it's a bit too narrow to use the larger coolers.
Unless the heat pipes are damaged a cooler suffers minimal effects from age, as it's self contained and metal.
I'll admit I'm not a big fan of it (excuse the pun) for a quad core as it can get a little loud to me (I've really gotten into keeping my pc's quiet)
If you still want to consider full ATX then have a look at the NZXT Panzer box, it's not without it's faults and it looks smaller than it is (mainly because it's short but wide)
The other I'd seriously look at is the new Coolermaster HAF 912, this thing is on the small side for a midtower however it's a good chunk wider than most (not as wide as the panzerbox) this lets it fit a 200mm fan in the front and top and leaves plenty of space behind the motherboard tray for cable management.

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
P180 mini can fit a 16cm cooler btw.

Supposedly it is back to October again:
http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/ite...ck-to-november
Anyway, the HD6000 series is meant to have 4D shaders instead of 5D ones so it is worth the wait IMHO to see how it performs and how much it will cost.

The motherboard in the build I suggested has an IGP and the OP already has an X850XTPE. TBH,if they are going to have long periods between upgrading their graphics card they might as well wait a month or two to see if the new cards are much better.

I never said it didn't.
most decent cases will.
In fact I stand corrected on the Vulcan, you can fit a lrage cooler in it (I've been looking at so many cases recently I'd got them mixed up)
The big problem is only if you try to put a 200mm fan on the side panel or fit water cooling (inc the all-in-ones like the corsair h50) then you'll need to get creative to get it in.
The case I was thinking about was the InWin dragon slayer http://www.inwin-style.com/website/p...5&iw_pd_id=13#
which will not fit a 120mm fan based tower cooler as there's only about 145mm clearence, the mesh side may again make up that difference, I cannot find a review of it that tries to put a large cooler in it.
So many reviews saying what a great gaming case it is and using an intell stock cooler in it
Still it has a lot of potential even if the looks are an aquired taste.

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
nice build mate.
As for the mini-p180...it's pure quality...i had one...but mind you it fits only matx boards, and it's basically the same size as the 300.
as for the gfx, i would wait as well for the 6xxx series, I think it shouldn't matter which month it comes...it will be here soon enough :P

Yeh i do wanna wait, but i need it by 2nd week Nov. So i dunno yet!
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Wait till start of nov then, if nothing is out get a 5850 or a GTX 460 1gb.
-
Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Yeh, think ill have too :)
Got a 7800GTX but it will depress me having that in my new rig :)

Re: 700 Notes - Gaming Build
Thread resurrection :)
As u can see from above, I was planning on waiting for the new ATI cards, but from what ive read, i dont think i'll be gaining much from it, and my current pc is having difficulties booting up :(
Ill be using CAT THE FILTH recommended build on the other page, so just seeing if anything has changed in the last 2/3 weeks since it was recommended?
Thanks all
