    Fastest 1TB+ HD

    Hi all

Having taken the path of an iMac I am now looking to work round its limitations by choosing the biggest and fastest hard drive.

In my PC I had a WD10EACS and a WD1000FYPS ( I like Western Dig!!) but I feel these may a bit slow to use as a primary HD as I always used them for storage and backup.

Looking to spend some money on a decent value hard drive above 1TB (preferably Western Dig) but I see the old days of comparison charts being made are pretty much over and Scan as well as other suppliers seem to offer a massive choice in this category, namely green, blue, black, 32mb cache, 64mb cache. So for the first time in a long time, I am utterly confused by which hard drive to get and was hoping someone in the loop here could offer their advice!!

    Merci Beaucoup!!

    Re: Fastest 1TB+ HD

the cache size is not always key.... some drives with slightly smaller caches load games quicker for example.

I'm not sure that, in the real world, you'll get huge speed differences long term with any specific drive.

But popular here ARE the WD drives, and the Sammy F range is popular, though not with myself, and just in my camp... I like Hitachi's cheap 1TB drives.

    Re: Fastest 1TB+ HD

Haha, well with my experience with Hitachi (and IBM) I want to steer well clear of those and stick to the WD range to be honest!!

I just saw a WD1000FALS that is 32mb cache SATA II seems to be in the Black range but its £70 for a 1TB!! I am wondering if I should just stick to one of the two I have?? :S

    Re: Fastest 1TB+ HD

Haha, it isn't going to work guys! I am very happy that Maxtor and Hitachi managed to make one hard drive that has lasted but I don't have a death wish like some

I have got it down to

WD1002FAEX ( In hope that SATA 3 is backwards compatible)
    HD103SJ

PS I still have a Maxtor and a Seagate from the 90s and they both work. However all the Deathstars are dead :S

    Re: Fastest 1TB+ HD

Having had a number of drives fail on me - including a Crucial SSD - I am now totally brand agnostic! I've had to RMA/have lost WD (inc a Velociraptor), Maxtor, IBM & Samsung so far.

We've had a similar experience at work (lost WD, Maxtor and Seagates there.) Nowadays, I tend to go for the cheapest drive at the capacity I want.

I personally don't mind brand of drives I have these days, well so long as it's not Maxtor. I used to say I'd never have a Seagate drive but well kinda back down on that one, I've got three !

    Re: Fastest 1TB+ HD

The 1.5TB and 2TB drives tend to be more orientated towards storage rather than performance AFAIK.

IIRC,the Samsung F3 and Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB drives are the fastest current hard drives of that capacity.

    Re: Fastest 1TB+ HD

Yes, Cat is right there, everyone else seems to be aiming for people who want storage over speed. That said I'm using a Seagate 1TB LP for my main system drive and I'm hard pushed to find any difference in speed between that which runs at 5,900 rpm and my 500 gig barracuda at 7,200 rpm.

SCSI drives are great, but are way over priced and far too noisey for the home environment.
