Clicking fan on a foreign Dell - who can fix it?

    Hi all,

I bought a Dell Inspiron 1420 out in China when I studied there for a year in 2008. It's been a right little soldier, but now the fan clicks and could do with replacement. With it being marked as a Chinese model (although I'm sure 1420s were sold worldwide, they were certainly sold in America) Dell UK won't touch it. It's a very simple repair for somebody who has the part and knows what he's doing, but a fair amount of disassembly is required. Does anybody know a place that would be up to the task? Or is there a way of making Dell do the work?

    Cheers!

how fast do you need it doing ?

and 2nd, can you get over to ilkeston to drop it off ?..

if not i could pick it up next time im in nottingham and do the work for you, it would take about a week as i would rather get the offending fan out to make sure i get the right one 1st time.

oh i used to fix laptops for a living before deciding its more fun not to be stuck in the same building day after day

Ha - fantastic I can certainly pop over, I'm having a website built by a guy in Ilkeston. I'm off to live in the Alps from Nov 19th, so as long as it's done before then tbh... Shall I order a replacement fan and sort a date when it arrives, or do you have better contacts for that? How's the tripod?

if you know what fan to order then feel free to get it, i see some on ebay for £15, even though they say uk i get the feeling there coming from hong kong!

im assuming it clicks in time with the cpu fan spinning up and down ?
let me know when your due over next via pm and i will give you the addy, at least you know where it is then

weekdays after 6 or im in most weekends.

tripods great thanks, but as of yet i have not had a proper chance with it, spent nearly a week on RAF conningsby watching typhoons taking off last week as the IT office was facing the runway!!!, every time i got off base and drove to the viewing area (no pics on base) they had stopped flying, the last day i was there a bloody lancaster flew in for a show that weekend and i had left the kit at home as it was a wet morning

    GUTTED!

Haha - same as last time, gotta keep the kit to hand if you're travelling places you might need it.

Had a quick hunt on ebay and found this selection:

    http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_trkpa...=p5197.c0.m627

none of those appear to be branded by Dell, but I guess that would be because Dell buy in the parts anyway? The best idea seems to be what you mentioned above - I hand the lappie over, let you disassemble it and then pick a fan based on the one you take out. Takes a bit longer, but would seem to offer the best chance of success. I should be over in Ilkeston next thurs to talk about web design again, that sound good?

About the clicking - the lappie is silent before it gets hot as the fan doesn't spin up then. When the fan starts spinning up the clicking starts. It actually seems to continue to kick out a fair amount of air and it never overheats to the point where it shuts down, but the noise is irritating. I've got a feeling it was the Beijing air - so much air pollution out there that I had to get the camera dust blower working through the vents every week or so, with huge clouds of dust flying out. Must have shortened the life a fair bit!

thursdays fine, pm me wednesday night to remind me and i will give u my addy, it may not need a new fan as chance is somethings stuck in it that can be removed when its out.

all those fans are the same so its up to you if you want to get one 1st if you just want it swapping anyway. im easy either way.
