If it is not in warranty buying a replacement would seem the thing to do. You have provided no information what would allow for any diagnostics, or even what exact model the TV is. The back light could have failed, which is why you can't see anything if however the sound has gone too, unless there are some handy fuses to replace, it sounds like replacement right option.

    Re: Phillips lcd problem

Could be any one of a number of things. Picture failing could be failure of the backlight, or more likely, the backlight pwer invertor. Loss of sound could be failure of the sound amplifier, (if the rest of the TV is working nrmally - but difficult to tell with no pictre) or failure of the man PSU.

Reapir - probably best taking it to a specialist repairere. Unless you are handuy wth a soldering ron, and have some knowledge of TV technology and electronics (which f yu had, you wouldnt be posting here ) you are unlikley to be able to do anything.

I am assuming that you have checked the obvious things like the aerial, and whether it works with an external AV signal from (say) a DVD player?
