    help -Soundcard and speaker system

    Hey,
I'm looking for a sound card and speaker system. My usages are simple, some gaming, some music, some movies - for bedroom and not home cinema kit. Because I'm no audiophile and will use headphones more, I'm not looking to spend £500 on a high end speaker system and soundcard the volume of which will remain at 5% because of neighbor complaints, despite such kits lasting a long time (feel free to sway me though)

What I'm looking at at the moment is :
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...-headphone-amp
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/logit...rs-70w-rms-oem

Any alternative suggestions or comments on these?

    Thankso

I don't see you have any issues with those. Having the 5.1 surround sound on your PC is nice, but if you have a small room the cables might prove to be a bit of a nightmare. Perhaps havea look at some 2.1 speakers or even a set of decent 2.0 speakers.

I've though about 2.1 but 5.1 has more potential and are similarly priced based on what I've seen. Yep, I agree, chances are they will be positioned as 2.1 speakers and only spread out for movies.

In which case I personally wouldn't bother buying a 5.1 setup if your not going to position them as intended and only do it when watching movies. It really will grind your gears after a while everytime you do it.

Re: help -Soundcard and speaker system

I was looking at these logitech ones today as I'm after a new pair of speakers. Look fair decent, don't have surround sound but apparently they have 360 degree sound.

    This is a cheaper one

Re: help -Soundcard and speaker system

You might be better off with the more expensive set as they have a higher sound output. While I realise the output power is not the end of the world it does make a difference to the size of room you have. If you have a very small box room you won't need much more than about 10 watts, but if your room is bigger your going to need a set of bigger speakers if you want to be a fair distance away from your PC when watching movies for instance so that the sound fills the room better.

There's nothing worse than an underpowered set of speakers being run ina large room at high volume as they'll distort and crackle worse than rice crispy's !

Re: help -Soundcard and speaker system

You will notice the quality of your soundcard if you use quality headphones but not so much through a speaker set at low volumes.

Why not buy a cheaper, but adequate, set of 2.1 speakers and either upgrade your soundcard or headset. There is nothing wrong with the Xonar you have chosen but the next tier of cards have better quality sound and lower SNR.

Also are you a gamer or an audophile? I believe the Xonar's have the slight edge on sound quality but their EAX emulation is flakey so for pure gaming I have read they are less compatible than their Creative equivalents and take slightly more cpu (albeit only a few fps difference).
