    RC410L/800 M-2 BWOD issue

    hi guys

I am new to the forum - so apologies if I am posting in the wrong place...

I have been given this old pc was stuck on the windows xp startup screen. I checked he drive for errors, etc but all was fine. I eventually formatted the drive and attempted to do an xp reinstall.

I am now getting a BWOD...I am pulling y hair out...

I havent flashed bios or resetted the cmos as I rather get some advise first...

    The system is a Intel celeron 3.2ghz. 2 x 512mb DDR2 667 ram, 80Gb Seagate SATA HDD.

I dont have the cash to purchase another computer so this is a chance to make something out of it.

    Please can someone assist me.

    Thanks

    Avi

    Re: RC410L/800 M-2 BWOD issue

    Hi Avi, welcome to Hexus.

The first thing I would try out would be to download a Linux distro ie Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/, burn the .iso image to a cd/dvd leave the disk in the drive and boot from the image (you may have to go into the bios settings to allow the dvd drive to be the first boot drive), this is called a 'live' image, this os is run entirely from the cd/dvd and does not have any impact on your hard drive at all, the reason I would do this is simple, if the Ubuntu desktop appears on your screen it suggests that your hardware is fine and that the problem lies with the install of windows (a re-install may fix it).

If the pc boots fine with the Ubunu OS (and you don't particularly require windows for some function that only windows can perform), you may find it easier to install Ubuntu to your hdd as your OS, you can do this from the Ubuntu desktop screen.

If the pc still crashes with Ubuntu, then the problem is most likely hardware related, it could be any number of things, but a good place to start would be buy checking the memory with memtest86 from http://www.memtest.org/, again you will boot from cd/usb memory stick and follow the instructions onscreen.

For referance, this is an image of a PCI-e slot http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...PCIe_Slots.jpg, and an AGP slot http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...x-AGP_slot.jpg

    Hope this helps.
