    Enterprise NAS Systems

Does anyone here have much experience with mid level Enterprise NAS systems? I am looking at the N8800PRO at the moment but if anyone here has already had exerience with this or any other products please feel free to give me your point of view on them.

    Thanks.

Got a Thecus N8800Pro, N7700Pro and N4200Pro... all performing backup repository duties in a DC. iSCSI works well, web interface is good, alerting is solid...

I'd rather have a Windows Storage Server unit to integrate with Active Directories, the Thecus AD joining is a bit temperamental, and it can be difficult sometimes running the network interfaces on different subnets and using file shares on both... I have had to install SSH mods and manipulate the routing table at times.

If you aren't too worried about AD and you would rather use a single or bonded network interface then they are good units, especially at that price.

My experience of an N5500 Pro is that its useless with AD. If you have a Windows based network, only a Windows based server will do for file shares if you want an easy life.
However I used the N5500 Pro as an iSCSI Target and so far it's been great. However it's only in the testing phase and will only ever be used for non critical data. It's full of single points of failure. The critical data is on a Netapp FAS2020 full of disks and that cost about 20 times as much!

    Re: Enterprise NAS Systems

I was looking after a couple of N8800 Pros in my last job, synced overnight by a basic rsync job. If I'm going to be honest the Thecus support was terrible, but they've since opened up an EU support depot, so things might be a little better now. I had major issues with AD authentication just randomly dropping and the NAS having to be rejoined to the domain, and the last time I checked there were also serious problems with authentication when using Server 2008 R2 DCs - that was ongoing for around 3 or 4 months before I left and I'm pretty certain the fix was "don't use 2008R2".

For the money they're pretty decent as file dumps, their iSCSI performance wasn't a patch on the NetApp SAN gear that we were using, but it was certainly acceptable for the price. I struggle to think of them as enterprise grade bits of kit though.

If this all seems like a bit of a downer on their kit I should probably also say that I have a Thecus N5200Pro at home which runs as iSCSI storage for my home lab, as well as a few backup duties and I couldn't be happier.

They sound a little bit turd to be honest, I really will need rock solid AD intergration.

If you absolutely need solid ADS then your only real opption is going to be a Windows storage server I'm afraid.

You get what you pay for
Our Netapp SAN cost around £18,000 when we got it and it only holds 2 TB

lol.... I had an interview to work for the MoD and even they didn't throw cash like that at their SANs and their server room was officially classed as a datacenter with its own power substation!
