wireless N question

so lets say i have the following:

-PC connected to a router via ethenet with 1000Mpbs switches both on the router and the mobo

-Router pumping out 300Mbps wireless speed

-Laptop connected to router, with the laptop having a n wireless card




If all the above were in the same room, i assume that if i wanted to transfer files from my laptop to my PC and vice versa(using homegroup), the maximum speed would be 300Mbps, which works out at 37.5MB/second.

Now in reality, what kind of data transfer speed would i be getting?

I would think that 10MB/s is probably more on the money, at best, purely because of the wireless.

It's a while since I've used N, but it was very unimpressive in my view. As ever, the stated figures are nowhere near to real life, I presume as a result of dropped packets.

Recently added a Gigabit switch to the home network and have been very impressed with the bump in speed. Transfers across the network have increased from 9 MB/s to 60-70 MB/s.

Not going to make much difference here, the wireless N will be the limiting factor.

when you say accross the network, do you mean wired by ethernet cable?

Yes, the network was moved to ethernet cables over a year ago as 802.11g was proving in sufficient at the time. The Gigabit switch was bought a few months ago and is plugged into the router and all the PCs are connected to the switch so internal transfers are pretty nippy. We have the switch separate as it's easier for lan parties.
