Selling an expensive laptop - help needed!

    Hi guys,

    I have one of these:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-VPCS13V.../dp/B00452UCS4

    Plus one of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-VAIO-VG...7152065&sr=1-1 - (an extended life battery)

Plus an extra Sony 1 year warranty worth £76 to sell.

All that adds up to about £1550. It's all brand spanking new, never used.

Any suggestions on where would be a good place to sell it? I'd be wanting about £1450, maybe a bit less.

    Thanks...and no it isn't stolen!

    Tim

Ebay perhaps? This kind of stuff tends not to sell on the classifieds here. Gumtree is also worth a shot. Or just amazon? If you sell them separately for £50+ less each then you're bound to sell them if they are in good condition

Not sure it will sell for that much, its not much of a discount from list. Unused is different from unopened (which is it). Warranty is generally not transferable from the first owner. Best thing to do is to find a family or friend you could offload it to, that way you can value add by setting it up/IT support to get the price you want for it.

Wow super fast response. Thanks. So you think amazon is a good bet? Do they charge for the privilege?

Gumtree, I find, is just full of scammers. I put my old iphone on there and it was terrible - I got about 40 people a day asking me to send it to Nigeria.

Oh right sorry - it's unopened.

Re: Selling an expensive laptop - help needed!

This is just my view, but if I was looking to buy a laptop (and bits) of that price level, I'd want it to be quite a bit cheaper than list to risk buying it second-hand, even if unused and unopened. Why? As was said above, warranties are often not transferable, but even if they are, the legal protection you get as a consumer buying from a shop is a LOT better than an individual buying from another individual. Sale of Goods Act rights give you some protection for up to 6 years, and the Consumer Credit Act gives you rights against the credit card company too, if you pay by card. But buy privately and you lose all that.

And, in a bit more of a special case, as a VAT-registered individual buying (for work) I'd get the VAT back if I buy from a business, but not if I buy from you' so you'd lose buyers like me right away at that price.

In my view, your asking price is much too close to retail price ..... but it's just my view. Others may not agree, and it's your gear to sell (or try to) at whatever price you want.

Free to list on amazon. I think if I saw it listed on the same page as the one amazon are selling (as is the custom there) and it was £100 less I'd go for it if it's unopened.

Re: Selling an expensive laptop - help needed!

    Thanks for the input everyone.

I've put a listing on Gumtree to gauge interest - had a few emails so far but only one of these seems to be genuine! I think you're right about it being difficult to sell laptops at this kind of price.

I put the prices through an eBay fee calculator - apparently it will cost a total of £71 to sell, which doesn't seem too bad to me, so I might just give it a shot on there. Amazon wanted 11.8% of the final price...ouch.

    Thanks guys
