    SN45G help please

I have just put together the following system:

    SN45G
    AMD XP3200 cpu
    2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR
    Pixelview FX5200 128MB video card
    120GB Maxtor HDD
    Advansys pci scsi card
    LG 52x24x52 CDRW
    Windows XP Pro

I am having problems with the machine frequently resetting and the on board sound doesn't work even though the Nvidia drivers are all installed OK.

Can anybody please offer any suggestions? Thank you.

could be that the standard PSU isn't enough for all your gear. You might think about upgrading to the 250W SilentX one. That seems to cure a lot of the issues i've read about with your syptoms.

    Thanks for your suggestion.

Is it the cpu that uses the most power? I have a spare XP2400 cpu. If I put that in and left everything else the same do you think that would improve things?

    Thanks again

i wouldn't have thought so. The easiest thing to try would be to take out the pci scsi card, I think. I don'y actually have a sn45g myself (have a sb75g2 with 250W PSU) so my sugestions are based on what i've seen elsewhere.

    Couple more thoughts:

What brand is the ram your using? - can be picky with ram
What thermal compoud are you using & what are your temps like?

Take the case off your shuttle and check what the make of PSU is. if its an enhance psu then its the psu thats the problem as theyre ruddy piles of crap. if its an achme psu then theyre good psu's so it should be ok.

Regarding the sound you sure its enabled in bios? Usually when you run the nvidia drivers it installs the mobo drivers, sound, lan, usb etc all at once. try reinstalling the nvidia drivers off the cd.

I need the scsi card to connect my expensive scanner!

The ram is the Major brand from Microdirect and the paste is the stuff that came with the Shuttle.

i had lots of problems with my shuttle crashing and resetting, and traced it back to the CPU overheating rather than anything else.

i solved the problem by cleaning the processor and heatsink and applying some arctic silver 5 (bought from www.overclockers.co.uk).

you might want to try that (as a cheap solution)

not a clue why your sound isn't working ! have you tried all the obvious things ? cables plugged in / headphones / right socket / speakers powered - it happens the the best of us.

out of interest - how long before the thing crashes ? is it during intensive operation or light use ? did you use the shim ? what are the temps like under load ?

    I too

Funny thing... I built a sn45g for a friend using all the same parts mine has, except swap the Ati 9600xt for a AIW 9600 and we can't get his onboard sound to work! My box works great! I swear we've tried everything! If anyone has the answer to the sound issue, let me know!

I had problems with my SN45G

It kept freezing after 20-30 minutes or so of being on, no matter what it was doing.

Each time it would need restarting, and on restart lost the BIOS settings every time i.e. back to December 2003 00:00:00, 600MHz etc (XP-M 2500+).

I reseated the Heatpipe, upped ram timings, underclocked, all to no avail...

Then, I removed the battery and replaced it with that of my old PC - it's working like a dream. I've got my Twinmos PC2700CAS2 running at 208Mhz 2.5-3-3-11 with no errors on memtest86!

If all else has failed, try the battery, even just reseating the existing battery. You never know...
