    460gtx 768 sli?

    Ave!

I am considering upgrading to two 460GTX 768mb graphics cards. Now for the price/performance is this worth it over a 460GTX 1gb or even 6850 crossfire. The decision perhaps lays with price; The 1st choice thus far is two 460GTX 768 cards, which costs £245, the cheapest 460GTX SLI set up is £300, and, if I am correct the lesser performing 6850 crossfire also costs £300. Now, you people are better informed then me, what is better?
Also in regards to the future I see the 580GTX and new High end ATI cards are to be released, what does this mean for the prices of the cards I am looking at? Please, bless me with your wisdom!

    Regards.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

They're already fighting a price war in the 460/6850 segment, so once bulk stocks of 6850s have starting arriving they won't drop much if anything in price in the future, even with a new high end card around the corner.

As for SLI vs CF vs Single.. I'm a fan of single cards in general, but if you're doing it from the get go then it's not a bad option. SLI is slightly more compatible than CF, so I'd go for that to minimise issues, but both are quite well supported for old games or new ones that are famous.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

No point in reducing prices of the GTX 460 when the GTX 580 is released. They aren't competing at all. I would say that the 6850 performs equally well if not better than the GTX 460? Which version were you saying was superior?

Ahh, well I had thought that two 460gtx 1GB cards are faster than two 6850. Both set ups costs £300.
I am looking at two of these-

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/768mb...2xdl-dvi-mhdmi

There is a few fps improvement, but the £50 seems a good saving. After all £250 for a two card set up that beats the 480GTX is a good deal, rather than the £300 for a few extra fps, that is not such a good deal. If I am incorrect in this then I apologise, please correct me!

I've not seen how the 6850 scales but i think single card it's faster than a GTX 460.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

I have been doing some further reading, and it seems the 6850 crossfire set up is better than the GTX 460 SLI set up. Thus, I think it is fair to say the £50 price increase over the GTX 460 768mb SLI set up is worth it. I will buy from scan tomorrow.

I would wait a bit until the HD6850 1GB drops under £140 again.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

Speaking as someone with 2 768MB 460s in SLI I can vouch for the performance being very good, allthough even 1680x1050 I can hit what I presume is a memory limit when using high AA. I would say that they are better value than the 1GB cards as there is maybe ~10% performance difference for a 25% price difference.

One thing I would say is that the second card gets quite hot (85C+), so the 6850s would have a significant advantage due to lower TDPs but its not a deal breaker.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

the 1gb will give you a little more future proofing gtx 460 but what motherboard do you have, if it is not sli cerificated then you would have to go crossfire anyway, i think they have a special on at overclockers to, i would recommend looking at bitech forum on scans recent feedback, it aint looking good.

    You're suggesting overclockers over scan?

I have the 'Asus p6x58d-e' that 'Supports NVIDIA® 3-Way SLI™ Technology Supports ATI® Quad-GPU CrossFireX™ Technology'. I don't quite understand the rest of your post, so could you rephrase for me please?

Also I play games at 1920x1200, thus the extra ram will be worth it. I think the best thing to do, as suggested above, was wait for the 6850 prices to drop a bit more, then buy.

    Regards.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

Have you considered just a sinlge GTX 480 ... roughly the same price and performance, but lower power consumption. I am not sure if it would be quieter but depending on what powersupply/case/ventilation you have, it might be a better bet.

Are you sure? I've got a feeling the 480 often draws more power even than two other cards combined.

Also X2 6850 is about 20% faster than a 480GTX. When are the new high end cards coming out? If it's in two-three weeks it might be worth waiting.

    Re: 460gtx 768 sli?

Personally i would wait because the prices have come down on the current cards - there is no guestimate like before the 68xx launched.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

A GTX 480 draws less power than 2 GTX 460 in SLi not sure about 2 768mb ones.

A single 768mb draws 20 less watts at load than a single 1gb model and the GTX 480 draws 40 less watts than 2x 460 1gbs in SLi ... so I reckon a GTX 460 probably draws very similar amount of power at load to a 2x 768mb 460s probably only a fractional amount less.

After doing a little reading around it would seem that unless you have 30" monitor and play at 2560x1600 then two 460GTXs 768mb in SLi is a better option. However if you do want to play at 2560x1600 then one GTX480 is better. I got that from here.

Still I stand corrected though ... two 768 GTX 480s are probably better than one GTX 480! ... sorry
