    Shrinking Partition - "Access Denied"

I'm so baffled by this problem, everytime I try to shrink my partition (on my second hdd) I get "Access Denied"... I even tried in diskpart.exe with administrator account.

How can I partition my hard drives through Windows (without losing data)? Is it normal to receive this error "Access Denied"? How can access be denied to the Administrator (using cmd prompt to enable the Administrator account)? Which leads me to another question, should I disable the Administrator account or is it safe to have it enabled? I use a Normal Account when I log in for added security, I don't know if having this Admin enabled reduces security or not.

I don’t think you have access permission issues but a problem where the disk partitioner not able to a shrink partition because there is still chunk of data in way, unconsolidated data, such as a page file.

Could you try shrinking the partition by a tiny bit? You might be able to shrink your partition by a tiny bit before you hit the unconsolidated data. If that works it points to unconsolidated data, I think you can get solve the problem by disabling the page file and defragmenting the hard drive in question.

Set password your Admin account and leave it if you want to continue using a limited account, you can’t delete it anyway.

I've already done the permissions solutions, which didn't work, as you have correctly presumed is not the culprit here.

I am trying to shrink by 14gb... I thought that was small already. I am making this dedicated to page file.

I have already disabled page file on all my drives for this.

Is there some way to delete the old page file or something that may be in the way?

You sound like you're on the right track with what you suggest, I think you may be right, but I've already defragged... hmm

Try a disk deframenter tool like perfect disk which aparantly is good at consolidating free space, it's not free but you can use the limited trial.

Re: Shrinking Partition - "Access Denied"

I would try moving any essential data from the partition, deleting it, and creating a new one.

Re: Shrinking Partition - "Access Denied"

why create a partition, if you have the free space and set a fixed paging file it makes a partition pointless.

once its setup it wont grow or shrink if you do a fixed size of 1.5x the ram.

i have a drive set aside for paging and temp files, its fine without splitting it.

Well I thought splitting it would improve the performance, but I just spent the past 2-3 hours watching GPart work to no avail...

At the end of 2-3 hours of partitioning, it then started partitioning again, identical to the beginning, saying it would take 5+ hours... so I cancelled it... it says it could cause damage to the data, but my D:\ is safe and sound it would appear.

I think I'll leave partitioning alone, it's turned out to be more trouble than it is worth!

I hope Windows 7 is better, otherwise I'm switching to Linux, I can't believe that the computer can tell an administrator "Access Denied" that is horrible coding on one of many potential fronts. While I'm not a coder and I appreciate their hard work, it doesn't take a genius to see that something is wrong when the administrator is accessed via Cmd prompt and cannot control his own computer/network.

to be honest you didnt plan this reinstall very well, all the partitions should have been done prior to windows being installed

judging by the amount of threads popping up with your name you need to take things a step at a time and relax a little

maybe treat this week as a dry run and start fresh next week so you dont have all these problems, including putting labels on the speaker cables

I agree, I've learned a lot this week, and I keep making threads to learn more

I don't know if I want to redo windows though, and since Gonz0 sort of said it's pointless then I don't see why I should now
