CPU Fan running way too slow.

I have a P5E64 WS Evo X48 chipset MB that I just inherited from my boss as payment for doing the upgrade on his gaming system.

It came with a Core2Extreme QX9770 and Scythe Kabuto cooler already attached, so I am very happy to say the least.

But the fan is running at around 200RPM according to BIOS, I also get the CPU fan error warning, and can see the blades spinning so I know it is not a misreading sensor.

I have tried putting Q-Fan setting to performance and it increased to just under 300RPM. I disabled Q-Fan in BIOS and it made no difference. The fan doesn't seem to have a fan speed controller on it either.

I also notice that the fan cable only has 3 pins on the header. I am thinking of buying a new 120mm fan with 4 pins, but I'm sure this is something I can resolve in the BIOS.

    What am I missing???

I also noticed that the CPU multiplier is set to x6, not the stock x8 and it is idling at about 50C, so it is definitly not cooling enough. I want to increase to x10 which should get me to the happy 4Ghz mark but if the fan isn't spinning, I won't try.

Reading from CPU-Z or similar in Windows? The multiplier has gone down probably because of Speedstep, which down clocks the CPU when idle to save power.

A 4 pin PWM fan may work better with the Q-Fan.

Yeah, at the moment BIOS is all set to auto and I can see it changing the multiplier under load.
It's strange about the CPU fan though. I thought that if it can't detect the speed that it will go to max power by default.

I tried as a test putting it in the PWR_FAN jumper and it's the same I might try powering it with the rail and putting a front panel fan control on it, or a 4 pin fan.

The Scythe Kabuto should come with a 120mm PWM fan, however the original fan might of been replaced.

QFan can work with 3pin fans if I remember correctly.

where do you get this "CPU fan error warning" ? in windows? what program?

it could just bee that the very low rpm is below the safe setting of the default setting of a monitoring program, although the default setting on many monitoring programs are set to the higher speed stock coolers.
Although those temps seem high and that fan rpm too low, a new fan wouldd probably be best.

Re: CPU Fan running way too slow.

CPU fan error is in POST, I have tried using all bios settings to adjust and the highest speed it will reach is 300Rpm.

I used speedfan to monitor and control once in windows but it is the same. I ran a 3D mark 06 benchmark, which completed ok, but the fan never sped up, even though it went over the tolerance I set of 50C

I guess I will have to try another fan as nothing seems to be actually controlling the speed.

Yep sounds like something is wrong with the fan, probably the motor.
replacing it is your best option, if you want a PWM fan then the best I've used so far is the Akasa Apache (actually made by Scythe) followed by the Coolermaster Blade master (which is a copy of the Apache)

As I live in tokyo, I might get a scythe then!

    Thanks,

I was considering getting a fan controller system, or putting a fan over that area as my case has a door behind the pc side panel with inserts for 4 120mm fans.

What case do you have? was it the Antec P150?

I remember from your other thread you talked about a budget in yen, due to differences in cost, available brands, we'll not always be that able to help you with what and where to buy (this is a UK based forum) however we can help in general terms of what is best to look for.

Re: CPU Fan running way too slow.

    Hi,

I think I will keep the case I inherited as it is actually quite nice, it's the cooler master Stacker 830.

I'm from the UK too, but been living here the past 5 years working in IT.

I have been using MACs as my home computers for the past 4 years and haven't built a gaming rig in a while, but after getting these pretty damn sweet parts for free I am starting to get back into it.

I bought a Gelid Wing 12PL today, 600-1800RPM 10-26dBA and 75.6CFM. it has the 4 pin PWM and I just hooked it up, bios reports core temp at 40. Which sounds better. Speed fan reported 27C with the fan at 1600RPM which sounds dubiously low, so i will have to DL coretemp I think.

I am going to clock it up to 4GHz now that I have a fan that works.

what is the best method? I can increase the multiplier to 10 I was thinking. I also want to turn off the speed step also for testing.

I had a look in the core2duo clocking thread, think i will go back and read some more.

Re: CPU Fan running way too slow.

    one final question.

i increased the multiplier to 9, booted and ran stable.

increased to 10 and blue screen

i see that the bios says i need to set the CPU_VO jumper to allow for over 1.3V. But I can't find it.

I looked in the manual, but there is no reference to it at all.

where is it? i am using a p5e64 ws evolution motherboard
