My 8800gts has blown Need a replacement

    Hi guys.

Its been a long time since I was last on here. I think my card has blow and I think that I need a new one. It works for a little while and then it fuses the whole computer to freeze. And when it starts loading it has lines down the screen but it works when I try a different card.

E question is want to ask is that there is a card on here for sale and I just need a card that can play cod on a 24 inch Dell screen with full details. I am also running windows 7.

The card that is to replace it is HD 4870. Would this be an ok card to get it. Also my power supply is the corsair yellow one 550watts I think.

    Thanks for any help..

4870 is easily powerful enough, yup.

Yep a 4870 would be good.

If you want a new card then a 6850 or gtx460 would be the ones to go for.

Re: My 8800gts has blown Need a replacement

    They're £120+, so a lot more expensive than a 4870.

Re: My 8800gts has blown Need a replacement

Hi there, i am not totally sure that my card has blown but I tried to load up windows and it just crashed my computer and i get lines on the boot screen. Is there another way that i can see if it has been broken or not. Maybe i should clean the dust out of the thing?

Also thanks for the replies guys

Re: My 8800gts has blown Need a replacement

Only logical thing to do is to try the card in another computer.

Cleaning it up and checking the temps might be a smart idea s well if it's in a bad state.

Re: My 8800gts has blown Need a replacement

Lines/corruption on post or BIOS is a bad sign, normally I sign something is dieing/dead, probably memory chip

A 2nd hand 4870/4890/gtx260/gtx275 is going to be your best best for a cheap card with lots of grunt
you could look at a 4850 or gtx250/9800gtx+

personally I'd not go near the new gtx460 SE

Re: My 8800gts has blown Need a replacement

If there is lot of dust then definitely clean it first ^^" Can also check if there are any physical signs like burnt chip or fan not spinning. If you are not sure than testing it in another working PC is a good way to confirm.
A 4870 is definitely better than the 880GT and would have no problem running CoD on a 24" monitor with pretty graphics.
I also recommend 6850 or 460 for a new card, but not the SE.
