Building my first PC. Please Help

    Hi guys,

Recently decided to built the computer from scratch, but haven't done this before, therefore I am not sure if the components that I have picked do match or even if they will fit into the case that I want to buy (I have contacted Thermaltake, but havent received a reply yet). Any help or advice would be really appreciated! Thank you!

Here are the components I have picked:

    • 1 NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 580 - 1.5GB GRAPHICS CARD. Wanted a graphics card to be at least 480.
Was also thinking about EVGA cards, as they do motherboards as well, but not too sure about that one

    • Intel Core i7-960 Socket 1366 Quad-Core CPU Retail (BX80601960)

    • OCZ 240GB Vertex 2 2.5inch MLC SATA Internal SSD Hard Drive (OCZSSD2-2VTXE240G)

    • Corsair Professional Gold AX1200 High Performance 1200W Power supply (CMPSU-1200AXUK)

    • Thermaltake Level 10 Black Case

    • Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard (or Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard or equivalent)

I was interested in the feasibility of using components based on X58 motherboard and processor i7 and in the combination of processors, memory and motherboards.

I know I have missed the RAM and optical drive, as I am not sure what to get. If you have any suggestions, I could really use them

    Thanks a lot!

What are you going to use your PC for? Its one hell of a beast.

1200W is overkill imo; it would run two 580s. If you're planning on SLI then it will stand you in good stead.

    You'll need a cooler for the 960.

Would you be tempted by an SLI setup to save money on the GPU? The 69k cards are out at the end of the month. Availablility has been questioned though.

    Hey,

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I was thinking that 1200w is too much.

As I have picked the Thermaltake case, apparently for SLI setup I only need to use an Asus Rampage 3 Extreme motherboard, thats what the case seller told me.

Thermaltake case has an air cooling system 2x60mm and 1x120mm

wow always wanted to know who could buy that awsome case
Guess money is no problem, otherwise I would suggest changing the CPU for a i7 950. Less 140hz but should be a lot cheaper.
Also suggest the Corsair H50 or H70 CPU cooler (http://www.overclock.net/water-cooli...0-club-73.html)

    Hey,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, the case is amazing )) but its so big and heavy. I thought the case has an air cooling system 2x60mm and 1x120mm? Will that not be enough?

Irrespective of the air cooling capability of a case, you will need a cooler for the CPU which is mounted directly on top of it. You can get a heatsink and fan or water based system but as its your first time, try heatsink and fan or perhaps the sealed waterbased unit recommended above (Corsair H50 or H70)

Regarding Optical drive I would get this Optiarc AD 7260S or failing that its predecessor the Optiarc AD 7240S - fast, quiet and reliable drives.

One other thing, with that case you may struggle to use water cooling of any kind ( see this review

http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Therm...Review/?page=5) and you have to make sure that the cables for your power supply are at least 22" long.

You should have no problem fitting that mobo and graphics card in the case (again looking at the review I linked to)

Thanks a bunch for the advice! I will look through everything!
Also, do you know where I can find good bundle deals on PCs?

Intel stock cooler will work fine too, but it will be a shame if you don't overclock it a little.
Either way an after market cooler will keep it cooler and quieter.

Re: Building my first PC. Please Help

I would definitley Go for the 950 over a 960.

I Built my 950 rig a few months back, clocked it to a solid 3.6ghz increasing only the FSB, Idles at 35C.

Never had a problem with it, Highly recommended.
