    Quiet Gigabit switch..reccomendations?

Almost time to move in to my new house (1 month left) and i'm collecting the bits that i'll need now.

The electrician has put in my cat5e now, so i'm looking at options for a switch. I'm going to need 18 sockets, and at least 12 of them should be gigabit (ideally all of them) to maximise the speed that I will get..makes life much easier transfering to and from the nas

I've been looking at the netgear JGS524 here:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/24-po...45-port-switch

Which is reasonably prices and has all the features that i'll need, however I am a bit worried about the fans on it as its been reported to be rather noisy, which is something that I want to avoid. I may not be able to but..what do you guys think?

The other option is to get 3 of their 8 port ones, which is roughly the same price within £5 or so. I know that they will be silent so that may be an option (despite the extra plugs required, although there are POE options there)..but i'm not certain if that will affect performance at all or risk creating extra collision zones etc (my network theory is a bit rusty!)

So, any reccomendations - is that the best switch for the job in my price bracket? (up to £300). If I just wanted 10/100 it would be easy..plenty of cheap 10/100 cisco kit around but none with full gigabit for a reasonable price

HP ProCurve 1810G-24 - fanless, web managed, lifetime warranty with a reputable RMA process. Ebuyer has them for £271.41. I got mine as-new from Ebay for £130. There's one buy-it-now on Ebay now for £182 delivered.

I'm happy to do some testing of mine if you want. I also have a 1700-24 which I used to use until I wanted gigabit, 2510G-24 (quite noisy) and a 2520-8 PoE with 8 10/100 ports & two dual-personality 10/100/1000 copper or SFP ports, if you want any info on those.

You can't get quiet 24 port PoE switches - they all have fans. -- unless someone can correct me. I did some digging on this a few months ago.

Don't forget to use a patch panel, to make life easier later.

Thanks for the recommendation - definitely looks to be exactly what I am looking for

Just ordered one from Misco - £200 rather than £170 but bit happier to buy it from a "proper" store, and also 3.5% cashback Winner!

Some of then you can open up and swap out the stock fans, although that will void your warranty

    Re: Quiet Gigabit switch..reccomendations?

I'm using a Linksys SRW2024 which is a 24 port GbE with Webview & PoE, but it is far from quiet - thankfully it is closed away in a cupboard
