Will my system be fine for another year of gaming??

With everyone upgrading to fancy Core i5,Core i7 and Phenom II X6 processors and cards with DX11 the Moose's system is looking decidedly ancient!

Basically my system is as follows:

Shuttle SD37P2 SFF PC with 975X motherboard and 450W Shuttle PSU(upgraded from 400W version of the PSU a few months ago)
    Q6600 at 2.4GHZ to 2.9GHZ
    4GB 800MHZ DDR2
    500GB Samsung F3 and 320GB Samsung Spinpoint T
HD4830 512MB overclocked to 675MHZ for the core
    Vista and XP
    20" Philips 200W6CS LCD(1680X1050 with a P-MVA panel)

I cannot afford to do a full upgrade yet but hopefully I can upgrade to an HD6850 1GB or an equivalent when Crysis 2 comes out. Hopefully the HD6850 1GB will be cheaper by then (read: nearer £100).

With the rate of PC game development, easily. Just get a graphics card as and when you need it (ie, when crysis 2 comes out, as you say), not before.

    I hope so!

Im trying to postpone an upgrade on my system for around 6 months and my current set up is similar to yours.

The main point being that I have not bought any games recently where I have been left feeling that I am missing out due to my current computer, although I know there are definately gains to be had.

Well,I have being playing many games under DX9 to maximise performance as very few games seem to have better framerates with DX10 AFAIK.

Re: Will my system be fine for another year of gaming??

Q6600 is still as strong as any when it comes too gaming - just hold off a graphics card upgrade for Crysis 2.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Well that's because almost all games are still just DX9 with a few added DX10 effects thrown in on top.
Games written natively in DX11 would be a major change however it's not going to happen as long as the consoles are still so far behind as it's easier to write the games for DX9 and port across to multiple platforms than it is to write in DX11 and port down to DX9 or port across (which will often require then to be ported down first)

As your current system stands there's nothing majorly wrong with it, upgradeing the graphics will help a bit, the mid range performance is only actually very slowly creeping up.
It might even be worth looking at a 5770 or 5830 if they are being flogged off cheaply for stock clearance.

Re: Will my system be fine for another year of gaming??

Am also in a similar position, but this is my take.
    BTW I run everything at 1920 x 1080.
My newest games (downloaded through Steam) are Civ V, Worms Reloaded and Alien Vs Predator.
Worms is worms and will actually run fine on my laptop's integrated intel graphics LOL!

Civ V does have a little slowdown, but not to an annoying point, and i've got detail set pretty high.

AVP runs really well also, although (without checking) i'm pretty sure graphics details is set to medium at best. The point is, however, that i'm happy with the visuals and the play.

The only thought i give to upgrading my graphics is whenever i read about the newest graphics cards coming out which give 75 fps on so-and-so graph and makes me want it

My main rig still can't play Fallout New Vegas at a decent rate of FPS. PC specs are over-rated

Fallout 3 ran fine at 1440X900 on my system at high settings. Looks like I will avoiding New Vegas now if an HD5870 1GB cannot run it OK!

Re: Will my system be fine for another year of gaming??

    Yeah, I'm sure I played Fallout 3 on my 8800 GTS 320

I think it's just horrendously buggy - the 8800 GS hack thing improved the framerates a whole lot, but it's still pretty rubbish. Fairly embarassing to be honest, especially considering it isn't even a remotely new engine. Ah well, you live and fail to learn.

Re: Will my system be fine for another year of gaming??

According to this review a GT240 should be fine at 1680X1050 with New Vegas:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...s_4.html#sect3

At 1440X900 it should be playable with an overclocked HD4830 512MB IMHO.

I suspect the game needs a few more patches to remove the bugs then!

It's one of those things you can just "feel", it's not smooth at all. I think you're right!
