Help with new build please

Using an old spingpoint 7200RPM on my new build today. Every booted up until I get this message:


"setup option is availale to set sata to ahci mode. Now is IDE mode, the system cannot support hor plug, would u like to change mode"

Y - Set Sata to Ahci.

I tried Yes, and when booting from disk the boot took sooooooooo long then finally couldnt detect the hardrive when doing custom installation to instal fresh copy of windows 7.

It says I need to instal the drivers for my Hardrive.



Is my hardrive busted?

My hardrive is in Sata 1 as my 6870 blocks all of them apart from Sata 0 and 1.



Any ideas guys.

- I cant test hardrive in other machine
-my old machine was randomly shutting down, but asumed it wouldnt be the hardrive.

Have you got linux live cd?

You could use that to check if your disk detects and whether there are any problems with it.

Also, whilst not ideal have you tried to see if it works in IDE mode?

I tried both modes ide and AHCI or whatever. Neither detect harddrive in that same spot. Im going to go to my friends tomorrow and get him to format it then try again. If not ill pick up a hardrive from pcworld unfortunately thats allthats open...

phenom 955 BE
The gigabyte 880G UDH2, (the one u first recommended)
4 gig carsair ram
antec 650 true power
and my old 7200RPM 500gb spinpoint.
Sapphire 6870
Antec p180 mini


the graphics card covers all but sata 0 and 1 ports, so those are the only one I can use. Hope that isnt the reason my hd isnt being read. Would rather my hd was just bust tbh

Is your hard disk a SATA or IDE one??

Most likely that it's bust. It's an old one you say?
Never mattered for me when I've used different SATA ports.

I would try the computer with the IGP first and cycle though the SATA ports to see if there is any difference.

I assume that you are using a SATA optical drive too??

Yes, Im using the only two available ports for optical drive and HD.

ITs a 3 year old drive with win XP on it at the moment, taken out of my busted rig yday.

That could be an issue. Make sure it's not trying to boot existing OS.

Im booting from windows CD. Goes "setting up windows" etc, then i choose language, then Custom install, then fresh instal (delete new files etc) then it sees no HD, so i have the option to browse to instal drivers etc, repair etc

If you've set the machine to AHCI mode, you may need to install a hard disk controller driver for Windows to see your HDDs. While installing windows in that bit where you choose which disk to install windows on there is an option to load a driver which you can find on the motherboard CD/DVD, pop the disc in and let windows find it.

Ive set to IDE mode and it still doesnt recognise it.

Everything is doing it really slow. Like to get to that stage will take 5 mins... Is that normal? Ive put CD in once and let it try, but it didnt really look.

Where abouts on the CD will it be?
