    Also thanks for the find on overclocking the Hd 6850 to 6870 performance. But then the Hd 6870 is very overclockable right?

    Regarding the HD6870 1GB so far it does not seem to be such a great overclocker relative to the HD6850 1GB. If you can get around 100MHZ on the core it is decent. Perhaps when the non-reference versions are launched better overclocks will be achieved.

    So would you go for 2 x 6850 in CF or 2 x 6870 in CF? Just wonder what to replace my 4870 with.....

    Only niggle I have is I have a 650W corsair PSU with 6 hd's so I'm not sure on if that that the power left in it for 2 6000 series gpu's.

    The HD6850 1GB was around £133 at launch at Scan, so if you can an HD6850 1GB for around £140 I would probably get a pair of these over an HD6850 1GB and overclock them both. You will only need a pair of PCI-E power connectors too.

    However, can your P45 motherboard do Crossfire??

    Yeah, its the Asus p5Q pro however I only have a dual core E8400 overclocked to 3.6ghz so that would be the next bottleneck for performance.

    Edit : I should point out that these cards will be driving 3 x 22" monitors (1650x1050), since two monitor have displays ports and running 3 off a crossfire'd pair of cards means I can get rid of my 3850 out of the second pci-e slot.

    I'd leave it for now unless you are suffering from performance problems. The 68xx series aren't even 30% faster than the 48xx series on average.
    130% of a rubbish frame rate is still rubbish. 77% of a great frame rate is still great.
    Of course, crossfire can make a huge difference but it will be at a sizable cost.

    Re: HD 5850 £153 quid on overclockers uk ... worth it over 6850?

    There should be space left in that psu for crossfire, 6850 with ease, 6850x2 is only about 50-60w more than a single 4870 under max load
    Approx Max load
    6850 = 130w
    6870 = 160w
    4870 = 200w
    3450 = 35w

    The main thing he's going to get with going for a new card is eyefinity, which is a good way to setup 3 screens, esp for gaming.
    non-gameing ether would be overkill, gaming . . . not sure, 2x 5850 crossfire was always recomended by people who run 3x 1080p eyefinity for games.
    As your res is slightly lower then 2x 6850 should be good, but a single 6870 and another later if it struggles also sounds like a good idea.

    According to the hexus review, there seems to be quite difference

    http://www.hexus.net/content/item.ph...=27053&page=12

    The main reason I am ungrading is I agreed to give my 4870 away and rather than spending cash on another one, I may as well spend a bit more and go the whole hog.

    As previously mentioned, it will be quite nice to hook all three into one card and then enjoy some crossfire goodness. Should also fix the windows gpu memory alerts I get with the 3450 card driving two 22" monitors.

    I am willing to spend the £400 for 2 6870's if its worth it but if 6850's are better value, then those are fine too. I was hoping to see the 6990/6970 out before christmas as a single one of those might be an option, with the idea of adding a further one down the road if I wanted to.

    The psu just became less of an issue as my nephews pc only has a 230W and the 4870 is going to require more than that. I guess I will be upgrading to the corsair 850W unit.
