HD 5850 £153 quid on overclockers uk ... worth it over 6850?
MSI Hd 5850 £153. Just wondered whether people thought this is a good deal or not. It performs slightly better than a HD 6850, but consumes more power, is older and doesn't have the newer features set of the Hd 6850 (not that, that is particularly extensive!).
Worth a punt bearing in my overclockers uk exorbitant postage and packaging fees?
EDIT:
Just noticed a HD 6850 on their site for £141 ... obviously the Hd 5850 really isn't good value at that price then. Just out of interest what would you pay for a Hd 5850 or would you just not bother with it anymore and get a 6850 instead?
EDIT2: OMG their postage and packing for a GFX card is now £9. I knew there was a reason I always bought stuff off scan :S

HAHAHAHAHA...Every time I was composing an answer you added an edit.
I was going to say...I would sell you my 5850 for £153 and buy a 6870 rather than the 6850.
Which made me think it just goes to show, how, if you are new to a market, you can make mistakes.
I bought my 5850 3-4 months ago, it cost £211 (plus 3 games). At the time I wasn't aware that AMD were planning a new release...had I been aware I would have waited the 3/4 months to see what developments brought. At the very worst I could of got a couple of 5770s in XF or a 5870 now for about what I paid for the 5850.
Oh well it's the curse of technology :)

HAHA sorry I love the edit thingy. It's because i post something and carry on thinking about it a bit and then usually find something interesting or relevant to do with it which I then want to add.
Yeah, well nvidia are going to bring out some more cards soon aren't they as well. It always seems there is never a good moment to buy something technology related.
I am in the market for a new card but I think I am gong to wait until after xmas ... see if prices come down.
Still you might as well stick with your HD 5850 now you have it. Still a very good card.

Yeah I'm happy with the 5850, in fact I'm really happy with all my rig, all I really want at the moment is an additional HDD or 3 for raid purposes, a blu-ray player and a quality HD FreeView / FreeSat tv card (although finding a quality tv card is a right royal pita).

I would wait until the HD6870 1GB drops down in price. Both the HD6850 1GB and HD6870 1GB have improved tessellation performance over the HD5850 1GB and HD6870 1GB.
The HD6850 1GB was around £133 at launch from Scan but the prices of both the HD6850 1GB and HD6870 1GB have gone up quite a bit in the last few weeks.

Sorry if this is off topic, but I've always wanted to ask you how you do those specs for people so quickly. By the time you've; apparently checked 3-4 etailers, found the cheapest price for each item, typed out the spec and posted to the board...I've just finished reading the question

I am quite prepaired to believe this:bowdown:
Re: HD 5850 £153 quid on overclockers uk ... worth it over 6850?
Bought my Powercolour 5850 around March this year for £200, so this is tempting me to go crossfire... Would there be any issues around crossfiring different brands etc? And not sure how overclocking would work either. Havent really kept up to date that much witht he 6-series, so not sure if its worth crossfiring anymore... Moose!!! Help me :)
But thanks to the OP, I have a day and a half to decide now...

These low prices are also heralding the intro of the 69k series.
Off topic
I think we should petition CtV to do a monthly buyers guide. A couple of other sites have them but I think Hexus is pretty unique in that we attract alot of budget builders with little bias. We can all put our chips in too perhaps!

On that excel spreadsheet you have. :P
And I seem to remember the 6850 being between the 5770 and 5850 in terms of performance (and closer to the 5770 than the 5850)

That would require me to be organised! An organised Moose....what has the world come to now! :p
An HD6850 1GB when overclocked is around the same speed as HD6870 1GB:

Considering that the HD6850 1GB only has one PCI-E power connector this is quite decent performance IMHO.

To be honest I've long since concluded that you update a spreadsheet weekly with the best deals. Moose power just doesn't wash with me unfortuantely :D
Re: HD 5850 £153 quid on overclockers uk ... worth it over 6850?
I just thought it was an encyclopedic (spelling!?) knowledge of all reviews (does that count as moose power!?). But a spreadsheet does sound more probable haha.
Also thanks for the find on overclocking the Hd 6850 to 6870 performance. But then the Hd 6870 is very overclockable right?
