Intel or AMD. Buy now or Buy later?

My AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ has seen better days so going to be doing a system update shortly.

I'm a bit stuck on whether to go Intel (i7 950) or AMD (AMD Phenom II X6 1090T).

Also I've seen from a few sources online intel and amd have new cpu's coming first half of next year so would it be more sensible to wait for those?

Any help on the matter would be good.

Nothing of much interest coming from AMD at the start of next year, but certainly worth waiting for Sandy Bridge from Intel unless you have a specific need for an X58 based system.

As always, if you can wait i guess its best as technology is always improving. Sandy bridge should provide a very good boost, Bulldozer chips are due Q2 iirc from AMD... just depends how long you want to wait tbh.

As for me im going to wait till bulldozer is out and the prices come down, so like a month after the release. Thankfully for e8400 is still kicking ass at gaming .

As Hicks12 said, whatever point in time you think about it, something better is always just around the corner. If you can get something good enough, at a price you're happy with, then my attitude is to just do it. It'll be out of date shortly anyway, however long you wait.

In fact, personally,if new model is due, I have a habit of waiting until it's being replaced, and then buying the old one at a discount price. Saves a fortune.

Yeh think I'll wait to see what the new CPU's bring.

Just had a quick google and sandy bridge does look good.

I've priced up 2 systems that I would be happy with now and if the new CPU's don't blow me away then I may well buy the older generation hardware hopefully cheaper.

Waiting for the new cards from nvidia and amd and will do the same thing.

Re: Intel or AMD. Buy now or Buy later?

Will be using the system for all sorts. Will be using day to day and for gaming but a good build now should cope ok with that.

Will be doing a bit of 3d rendering and photoshop stuff in the new year.

This will probably be my last upgrade for a couple of years as kids costs too much so want to get the best CPU I can for about £250 to £275 ish which is why I don't mind hanging on a bit If I can get something better in a few months.
