    Comment on my parts list?

Trying to build a cheap uATX system:

    Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2 Socket 1156 VGA Out 7.1 channel audio mATX Motherboard 230549 101 in stock £57.51 £57.51
    Compucase 6T10 Piano Black MATX Case With 400W PSU 20+4pin 1x SATA 144483 6 in stock £41.79 £41.79
    Intel i5 760 2.8GHz Socket 1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor 229999 209 in stock £149.99 £149.99
    DESKSTAR COOLSPIN 500GB SATA-II - 3.5 5400RPM 8MB HDS5C1050CLA382 247017 > 5 in stock £29.37 £29.37
    Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black 145450 > 200 in stock £11.99 £11.99
    Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit CL9 1.65V 239260 48 in stock £50.47 £50.47
    Asus 8400GS Silent 512MB DDR2 DVI VGA Out PCI-E Graphics Card 174131 60 in stock £24.41 £24.41

What do you think. Main priorities were quad i5 processor and at least 4GiB RAM. Might splash out on 8GiB but already more than I wanted to pay.

    Any changes, anything missing?

    ?
Is that really all you can afford?

At least try and shoot for something designed recently, like a Radeon 5450 (ideal for HTPC).

The 400W supply is that case is probably horrid as well.

Re: Comment on my parts list?

What's the computer going to be used for? Given the gfx I assume not gaming, and if you reckon you need a quad core then frankly you might be better off with an AMD hexcore build at a similar price. Plus that would let you get a mobo with decent integrated graphics so you wouldn't need a cheap discrete card.

And yes, you'll want a damn site better PSU than that. Stick with ~400W but look for something costing around £30 if you don't want your computer to explode

Re: Comment on my parts list?

I don't give a **** about graphics, all I want is something that can handle dual heads.
i5 and lots of RAM is required because all this box will do is ridiculous multitasking (100s of tabs, several documents, lots of DVD ripping and music plus movies simultaneously).

With that in mind, any other tips?

Phenom II X6 - its better at multi-tasking than the i5.

And as per everyone else, a decent PSU.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Comment on my parts list?

I have the i5 processor and its a great little CPU but it does sound like you might be better off with an AMD build. The AMD quad or hex core CPUs will do the job for you if you are not gaming (the i5 is a better gaming chip) and it will save you money to put towards a better PSU and hard drive. And, as others have mentioned, you can get an integrated GPU.

    Good luck

I don't care about hard drive at all. That's literally the least of my worries. I will upgrade to SSD when I can and have a 5TiB NAS. Where can I get on board GPU with dual heads?

Re: Comment on my parts list?

This is what I would look at getting:

    Phenom II X6 1055T ~ £140

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/204939

This is a six core processor.

    4GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ~ £48

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/234975

    Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H ~ £74

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/218931

Has USB3.0 and SATA3.0 and the HD4250 IGP which can support one DVI monitor and a VGA monitor at the same time. The SATA3.0 ability maybe useful if you want to add an SSD in the next few years. The motherboard also has all solid capacitors too.

    Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB ~ £32

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146252

This is a single platter hard drive.

    LiteOn IHAS124-19 24x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive ~ £12

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176026

Corsair CX 400W and Novatech KNIGHT Micro-ATX Tower Case ~ £52 including postage

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...U-400CXUK.html

    http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...m3c5a.html#top

You can get cashback from TopCashBack and Quidco on Novatech purchases

    120MM case fan and 92MM case fan ~ £4

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/63281

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/63283

The total comes to around £362. The OP also needs a copy of an OS too.

Sorry, but you are asking for peoples help and comments on your parts, then when people comment you basically tell them to do one?

You say the system is going to be used for multitasking and such, if thats the case, then surely a quicker hard drive would be an advantage to start with? You can still add the SSD later

You dont care about hd, the link I gave you yesterday would have gotten you 500gb extra for a fiver over your hd budget. You are about as pleasant as a doormouse that has just came home finds that his wife has left him for his best friend and taken all the cheese. Now in my best Samuel L Jackson voice......Manners mofo

The only thing I'm asking for advice on is motherboard/case/CPU. HDD and optical drive don't really make any difference. CAT-THE-FIFTH's post is really good, I just wish it were possible for close to £100 less. What's a budget equivalent to the CPU?

I would get an Athlon II X4 630 for around £67:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176579

If you cannot stretch to the motherboard I listed already then the MSI 880GM-E41 is around £49:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244433

However,it does lack SATA3.0 and USB3.0 but is much cheaper than the Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H.
