    Best buys on this budget

Computer for a friend, has case, operating system, monitor and HDD

    I was thinking:
    Althon x4 630 ~£63.50
    Gigabyte ma770t ~£54.50
    DVD drive Samsung thing ~£13
    PSU Corsair builder 430w ~£36.50
4gb cruicial ddr3 1300 ram ~£36 (play ram as posted in deals section)
    1gb gigabyte 5670 ~£80

So thats basicly what I was looking at... any suggestions comments etc? looking to spend about £280 preferably no more as budget was £300 and already bought operating system etc...

Main uses general documents etc but will be used for some gaming at 1080p resolution, HDD is a sammy F1, case is a silverstone job, operating system is windows 7 pro.

Re: Best buys on this budget

a 5670 isn't really going to like gaming at 1080p. I'd get a 1GB 5750 @~ £90 as an absolute minimum, and preferably a 1GB 5770 @~ £105 if the budget can stretch. If you need to trim the existing spec slightly to fit that in take the CPU down to an Athlon II X3 for ~ a tenner less: it should be just as good for gaming (one less core but ~ 10% higher clock speed) and more than sufficient for general office tasks.

If you're not set on a Radeon graphics card, the Palit GTS450 Sonic edition would also be worth a look. While stock clocked GTS450s have almost identical performance to the 5750, one overclocked as heavily as the Sonic (880 / 3900 vs 783 / 3608) gets up to around 5770 performance levels. @ £96 it looks like a good buy to me...

actually just a thought but the gaming doesnt have to be at 1080p its just running a 1080p monitor. Most of the gaming will be done on ps3 etc but the likes of football manager etc will be played on the pc. The person I'm looking for really is set on a quad core (even if he wont notice much difference). £10 extra isnt that big a deal for a better card though.

The Athlon II X3 450 is available from Scan for around £58:

I would also consider this motherboard:

The Corsair CX 400W is a better PSU than the Corsair CX 430W:

You can get cashback from TopCashBack and Quidco on Novatech purchases.

I agree with scary jim on the likes of upgrading the video card, as said above, AMD are very good for budget lately.

Buying second hand can also be good i have just build quite a decent spec gaming pc for £190, video cards especially can be alot cheaper by going back one generation i.e. buying ati 4xxx series... just as powerful for a better price (ebay or hexus classified worth a look)
