there are many flavours of citrix - its like saying "my microsoft isn't doing what I want"

abaxas - I think you have the concept of "whitebox" a little missaligned. an hp ML115G5 is an off the shelf commodity server.

a whitebox is more custom build like most people's PC's.

Yup, I've seen various errors relating to either one or the other in the two years ive been here, more so this year than last.

It could be due to the fact they are trying to get all council employees to log on and work in a remote desktop.

Sounds more like a connectivity issue to me but we are now getting way off topic, sorry about that.
    Jay, I dont mind.

I like the geeky/ techy stuff and like to understand the stuff better if I can.

See i thought about the connectivity thing, however a lot of the users affected are in the same building so i would expect a decent connection

This is what I would get:

    AMD Athlon II X3 420e ~ £56

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-Athlon-II-...item1e601ebc85

This is a 45W TDP CPU.

    Silverstone SG02B-F Evolution ~ £47

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/silve...finish-w-o-psu

    MSI 880GM-E41 ~ £49

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244433

    8GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ~ £105

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(...-9-9-9-27-165v

    Scythe Shuriken ~ £23

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/scyth...-amd-intel-cpu

You will need to reverse the fan so it blows upwards.

    500W Silverstone ST50F-P ~ £59

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/500w-...lus-bronze-psu

    This has fully modular cabling.

There were also cheaper short cable PSUs like the ST35F which were made for the SG01 and SG02 but these seem to hard to find now.

if its Metaframe its a good chance it running on 2000 server or maybe 2003 at a push so its not cutting edge.

If its not connectivity its either not enough capacity / overloading the servers or possible incompatibility with software running in the session. I would never use Citrix as a desktop replacment for users in the same building its stupidly expensive and has too many possible problems. Also If I had to do this I would just publish the apps to the users desktops. Are yo uall using thin clients or standard fat client PCs?

The users are spread through out the London area.

At present its a mix of thin and fat client PC's, but I understand there are plans to make all systems thin clients. I think it will only be engineers that remain on standard machine's, even us server desk agents have been reduceed to using a standard machine but then we have to use LYNX to remove in and access our Citrix desktop to carry out our work.

Wouldn't suprise me if the issues we fave are overloading related with the way this place can be.

It's a bit late, but thanks for the parts Cat.

Like the look of the build, will see if I can make it slightly cheaper in anyway maybe 6GB Ram to start with or something ~£300 is a bit more than I was looking to spend, although maybe I was being a bit...stupid expecting it to be less.
