housing for hdd

I dont know if i have seen one or not, but can you buy external housing for hdds, so you can make any hdd into a usb external drive??

yes there are quite a few out there - some will do IEEE 1394 as well as USB 2.0 ... basically converting any IDE (internal) HDD into an external drive using external housing which converts IDE to USB 2.0 or IEEE1394.

Get a removable hdd case for the pc then get a adpter from maplin works a treat @ USB 2.0 Speeds and much cheaper

For crying out loud please please try to get a firewire version. USB takes LOADS of cpu, firewire is done all on chip and takes anything from 10-50% less cpu.

OCS do an external chassis for all 5.25" stuff.

Yes but it's better to have the best of both worlds and ensure that you get one with both firewire and usb 2.0

... agreed firewire is better, but one of the key benefits of having an external drive is portability of data between non-networked computers - so with this in mind you would be limiting yourself to far less PCs which have support for firewire

... most of the converters that cater for both also cater for USB 1.1 - much, much slower of course, but useful for transferring data to an older PC

good idea, you know what adapter? i dont like the maplin site FAR to many things to serach through.

I have just got a digicam (canon A70 ) and was thinking with some digicams u can just press a button to d/l images on to comp, cauld you , i wonder, plug an external hdd in and d/l to that. i would think u need something else, but might work.....

Not when USB 2 uses 30% cpu and firewire uses 3%. although its more compatible i spose.

All Macs have firewire and quite a lot of pcs

2.5" = laptop
3.5" = normal ide
5.25" = optical drives.

all the ones for anything apart from laptop drives have been usb and firewire im gonna get one next week.

if i was in the UK i would buy one from eBay some people are selling a couple on there one looks nice one looks really ugly.

but seeing as i go to australia tonight ill get a local shop to order me one.

yup you can pick some cheap ones on ebay but personally i would spend your money on a quality product and not some platic housing that could cause more problems then a nice alu one
