    What to upgrade?

Got about £130 to spend on an upgrade, I was thinking a GTX 460 for now and an SSD if I can afford that at Christmas - or maybe that should be the other way round?
I don't game much and TBH I think that my 9800GTX is fine, but I would like to double my folding PPD with a GTX460 and to that end it seems pointless to pay for the 1GB version as the difference in PPD is minimal and I can always OC.
If I was going to get a Boot Drive how about a vertex 2E 60GB? I've only used 80GB on my current install and I have never been above 100 iirc, so 60Gb would be tons for me tbh. Use the old drive as backup and for media and we're good. The crucial C300 is only £2 more at ebuyer, worth it?

Get a console. PC gaming is dead and expensive. Fold with a PS3. You get Blu-Ray too.

No way I refuse to do that, I hardly game and with a PS3 I would get 900ppd.

I challenge you to go into the gaming section and say that !

PC gaming dead ? Perhaps not dead but most certainly taking a breather.

For Folding the 460 has a 10W higher(768MB) TDP so efficiency wise its a lot better, as well as for gaming.

If your going to pip for an SSD wait until after Christmas for the G3's from Intel. I'm not too sure how long it is before the new SF based rives appear.

Edit: apparently the SF2xxx based drives are coming in Q1 also.

    Re: What to upgrade?

    Sorry about that Nibbler.

I would probably look at the GT470 too. AFAIK,the GF100 is faster than the GF104 for GPGPU functions. However, the GTX470 consumes a lot of power at load.

    Thought so Cat
I don't want to spend more than £100 on an SSD so will it be worth waiting? Want to avoid the VAT increase too if possible. Will probably have enough for whatever I don't get now by new year so I might just go for a GTX460 this weekend while they're on today only.

Personally i would suggest waiting. The newer drives while expecting to fill the current price brackets are also expected to bring more capacity at said brackets. Either that or you can hope to snap up a discounted older drive when the newer ones are released

Edit: The Palit Sonic 1GB can be had for £138.

    Re: What to upgrade?

Actually,it looks like a GTX465 would be better for GPGPU functions than a GTX460:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/3809/n...he-200-king/16

You can get one for around £150:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/221886...edium=products

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003N18TG...SIN=B003N18TG0

Some GTX465 cards could be unlocked to a GTX470.

    However,I don't know if a GTX465 is better for folding than a GTX460 though.

    Re: What to upgrade?

I think I'm either going to go for a GTX 460 768 or really go for it with a GTX470. Damn I wish AMD would make something worth folding on, 5870 should get 15kppd if fps translated to WUs :X
That power draw on the GTX470 is a big disincentive.

PPD figures: GTX460 (either variety) 10-12kppd
    GTX465: 10kppd
    GTX470: 14-15kppd

The anandtech link gives some results for folding@home Cat

The 465 also uses ~60W more underload

    Re: What to upgrade?

Just looked at the Anandtech review again and the GTX465 and GTX460 are the same for folding!! Doh! For other video encoding the GTX465 is faster though.

Looks like the GTX460 768MB would be the best choice unless you can find an unlockable GTX465.
