xp2800 v xp3000

I've seen quite a few benchmarks now between these two chips and in some tests the 2800 is actually winning.

(ebuyer prices..)
the 3000+ is approx 187
the 2800+ is approx 122

Seems to me the 2800 is a bargain in comparison ?

Also some simple questions that I should know the answer too but don't lol ....

2800 and 3000 both run @ 333mhz bus, which memory does that require - PC3200? I'm not into overclocking anymore so just after the correct figure for those chips ?

Can you use PC2100 memory with the new CPU's, obviously with a performance loss but allowing me to wait for the memory prices to drop again ?

Can the newer CPU's be cooled with a Zalman quiet coolers ?

I'm currently running a 1800+ (palmino I think, had it a long time now) in an asus 266mhz board. Is it worth upgrading to the 2800 or should I wait .... ?

Motherboard would either be an Asus a7n8xSE or an Abit NF7-S.

Gfx card will be a ti-4200 128mb.

Aims for this PC : Gaming, coding, surfing... and in particular to be quick enough for HL2 (which is kind of guess work at the mo!).

i will say my usual line.....
get a XP1700+ JHUIB DLT3C from cpu city with some 3200 ram, they clock like a dream!!

as for your question about the 333MHz, that uses 2700 ram

I dont think you can use 2100 with those chips as they run at 166 nativly compaired with the rams 133...

unless you know the ram is capable of that speed.....

if you were to get the XP1700 i suggested you could run that at 133 with a higher multiplier till you got better ram

Are you upgrading your mobo as well ?
If so take a look at abits nf7-s v2.0

My current CPU idles at 58c and can game temp anywhere up to 64c, now this may be because it is the first version of the core but it has put me off the overclocking route with AMD's if possible.

Yeah the NFS v2.0 would be part of the upgrade.

yeah they are but the 1800's are nearly as good (will do the same speeds) and anyway they will get more back in stock

This is reminding me of the early 300a celerons which ran @ 450 easy. In fact I think that chip actually enjoyed being overclocked

Remember though, if you have no choice and have a 333fsb processor and only 266 RAM, drop the CPU back to a 266 FSB and sync it with the memory, then raise the FSB towards 333 and stop when you get instability. Then raise the multipler to get the Chip upto its maximum speed. You'll still get brilliant performace this way

The fastest AMD officaly supported FSB is 400mhz, so its not just for overclocking
I dont know what the officaly highest FSB supported on P4 boards are, as im not up on intel at the moment. If its faster, than thats what anything above PC3200 is for .
It can also be used for a 100% sure way of knowing you can overclock to that level

I've just got a 2800+, and atm in my system ive got 1x512 PC 2700, and 2x256 PC2100, and its runs fine at 333mhz fsb

Ive got an MSI delta ILRS Nforce2 mobo and it looks like you can set the memory FSB and the CPU fsp differently, i think, not 100% sure tho

but i'm running my 2800+ overclocked by just over 200mhz, and its stable as a rock - though the mem is running at the 2100 speeds, cos i crashed all the time with the 2700 chip in slot 1 :/ upgrading to 2x512 2700's soon but yeah it works great with 2100 mem


a word of warning, dont get an Asus a7n8xSE - they have a very very annoying bios problem, in which the bios will sometimes decide to corrupt itself if you try any overclocking. I've had to take 2 boards back cos of this problem, my MSI one works fine tho
