I usually get that when the slave and master jump settings are wrong, have u got anything else on IDE0? like a hard drive? or another device like a cd writer?

Yeah I suspect it's a jumpering problem. If it's the only device on IDE0 make sure it's set as master (or single master if it has that mode - usually only hard drives have that though.) If it's not the only device, make sure the master is set as master, and the slave as slave, hehe.

You may also want to try right clicking the CD drive in device manager and selecting uninstall. This will reinstall it upon bootup - might sort it out.

You should not run hard-drives and cd-drives on the same IDE cable, if, that is what you're doing.

Secondly has it always done this or was it the result of something you did?

There's nothing wrong with running them on the same cable - modern IDE channels have no DMA/PIO/ATAPI problems.

However, I will say that it is better to separate them where possible.

NOOOOOO omg...!!!! The cd rom worked like 3 days ago, and there hasnt been ANY hardware changes. My hard drive is SATA, not IDE! The IDE goes STRAIGHT to the cdrom, NOTHING ELSE! GAh! I tried uninstalling, it doesnt work!

OK, try updating your chipset drivers - perhaps the IDE driver is pooched. If that doesn't work uninstall the IDE channel - forcing it to reinstall when you reboot.

Otherwise, if you've got a second IDE channel (IDE1) try it on that, may be that the IDE channel has gone. (We have a load of old Toshie PC's at work that are a sod for this). If it doesn't work then the drive might have just died My old CD writer died the day before my DVD writer arrived at 13 months old just turned my PC on and a static orange light (it was an MSI one BTW)

Double check your connections (power and IDE) and try a different IDE cable if you can (and if it's not a notched cable make sure it's the right way around - someone might be trying to wind you up). And "DON'T PANIC!"... DVD ROM's are quite cheap anyway

Try setting your HDD jumper to CS (Cable Select) and your dvd/cdrw to slave.

    This sometimes works for me.

I had the same problem, i tried everything, jumpers, new IDE cables, but nothing worked.

I then decided to see if it was a power problem, becuase I only had 350w, so i unplugged my 5 fans and one hard drive, and restarted. BINGO! The drive was detected, so I bought a 450w CWT, and everything is fine now.
