    Hmm, maybe fully loaded with high-speed drives, all RAM/expansion slots full and under heavy load. 70w does seem pretty high for a realistic load on a system like this.

    I suspect that mycarsavw is correct in that the j models are notably less powerful than the non-j models, however as a 'j' owner (in my situation the 4-bay DS410j - see my sig for my experiences) I can tell you that i am very happy with it, and impressed with Synology for very good support so far.
    The new 'OS' which they released recently (DSM 3.0) is excellent, although I have no other comparators.

    What i would suggest is that if a non-j model is "above and beyond" what you need, then you need to get a j model

    Yeah, I expect fully loaded to mean 4x15k drives (do 15k sata drives exist?), a DVDROM in active use, 2x4GB sticks, a graphics card, IPMI card, a few bus powered USB peripherals, and doing some number crunching

    Then, just maybe, you might hit 70W. Realistically, it'll idle at about 25

    <cough>

    The 209j was woefully underpowered for what I wanted, I'll concede (having looked ) that the newer subsequent models are very well specced.

    Stay away from the 209j <grin>

    Re: NAS Solution

    Nope, but I made my comments based on my experience with the 209j assuming the subsequent models all followed suit.

    The current 211j is ideal for the circumstances presented in the first post - I wrote it off without fully reading things - something I personally hate people doing

    Re: NAS Solution

    Fancy doing a pseudo DIY solution?
    http://forums.hexus.net/current-barg...-cashback.html
    HP Microserver with 1GB and a single 160GB HDD. Around £120 with the cashback and it can take 4 disks
    I just got one.
