Re: Upgrade time, what to get
Oh dear I've just gone mad and some how spent £390 on a Scan 3SX SMART Core i5 bundle Overclocked at 4.5 Ghz so much for spending less and I've not got the GPU yet! :surprised: I think the wife is going to devoice me for this!
So I have about £180 ish left for a GPU
Re: Upgrade time, what to get
opps, you clicked the wrong button didn't you. ;)
(just beware when she uses that excuse on you) :innocent:
Did that include a HS?
For a card a couple of £ over £180 ati 6870 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-x...dmi-2x-mini-dp
or a gtx460 1gb Factory OC http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-e...dvi-i-minihdmi
or a bit faster for a bit more money http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-m...ores-mini-hdmi
Re: Upgrade time, what to get
For gaming a Core i5 2400 and an HD6950 2GB or a GTX480 would have been a much better build for gaming than a Core i5 at 4.5GHZ and a cheaper GPU. Both these cards are not only faster, but have more RAM and much better tessellation performance than the current cards under £200.
This is important if you intend to keep the graphics card for as long as possible.
The GTX480 is also on Today Only for around £245.
Many of the HD6950 2GB cards can also unlock to an HD6970 2GB and with the dual BIOS the risk is reduced too.
The longevity of a gaming build is determined by BOTH the CPU and GPU and the OP has got a less balanced build for their budget.

Wait for the geforce 560 and hope there's a bargain version. GPUs outdate so quickly that it's not a bad plan to weigh the initial budget towards CPU and plan for upgrades to the GPU over time.
Re: Upgrade time, what to get
have you considered 5850? The price on that is going to drop quite fast as the 6900 series are being phased in, so it should represent good value for money; as well as being more than capable of playing all games currently released at high settings.

Does anyone know if you can do any sort of overclocking with a 2500K on and H67 board (e.g. can you adjust the turbo boost higher) . or is there no overclocking available unless you have a P67.
Re: Upgrade time, what to get
Funny you should say that because I've not long got off phone with Scan and changed the order again after decided that the CPU power was well OTT!
Have now change it to a i5 2400, MSI H67MA-E45 H67 and a 2GB XFX HD6950 DDR5 PCI-E
The wife says I'm worse than a woman when it comes to shopping, she may be right!
Re: Upgrade time, what to get
Perhaps you should try unlocking the HD6950 2GB when you get it - the dual BIOS should be useful here!
Re: Upgrade time, what to get
Got this setup now and I'm impressed wacked all the settings to max in BFBC2 ect and the games are visually stunning and far faster than before :iloveyou:
