Novatech power supplies - any good
I need a new power supply after my enermax galaxy died.
don't really have more than £60 to spend and I know realise I don't need an 800 odd watt PSU. So I'm looking at 400-500 wat PSU's.
I have the choice of one of the novatech branded ones, or a corsair CX430 watt. I've heard the Corsair cx400 is a great psu but not easy to get hold of, so my choice is between the cx430 (or even the 500w version) or this novatech one novatech powerstation gaming 400w silent psu
I'm looking at getting one from novatech this afternoon so any advice would be appreciated.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
I would buy the branded corsair over a unknown brand made one even if it was cheaper than the corsair.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
+1, you have no idea who the Novateck one is made by. You shouldn't try to cheap out PSUs.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
Don't know which rebrand this is but I'd be willing to give it a go, novatech is very good on it's "own brand" warranties
although at the same time I'd not touch this one with a barge poll http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...ov-psu800.html
EDIT: actually I'd have a look at the 600w unit http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/p...ov-psg600.html if you treat it as a 400-450w psu it sould be fine
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
I got a Corsair 600W for about £50 on ebuyer..
the capacity of the PSU degrades about 20% over 1-2 years.. have to factor that in as well.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
AFAIK,the Novatech PSUs are made by OCZ:

Also,I would avoid the new Corsair CX series:
http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...ooks-crap.html
The new Corsair CX series is also made by OCZ but Corsair have overrated the units. The wattage is measured at 30C and the units are not 80+ certified. The older CX400W can supply more on the 12V lines than the CX430W. The increase in wattage is down to the 3.3V and 5.0V lines.
I would get this Antec PSU:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/245671
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/520w-...ps12v-v291-psu
It is made by Seasonic,is 80+ certified and can provide around the same amount of current on the 12V lines as the Corsair CX600W.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
I wouldn't use it, their warranty might be very good but it's not going to help if it nukes your PC is it? It's really not worth the risk when you can spend a few extra quid and get a proper one.
About the capacity degrading - not necessarily true, the caps can degrade especially if they're bad ones but with a decent brand they should have some headroom and good quality ones shouldn't degrade nearly that fast. I certainly wouldn't say 20% over a year or two with any half-decent PSU.
If it really is a rebranded OCZ then it should be ok but I'm not sure about that one. It's a shame about the new budget Corsair PSUs - the CX400 was a great choice for most 'normal' systems, good quality and a decent price. They seemed to have really cheaped out on the new ones, using their big brand name to make people feel safe buying what is probably a load of crap. :( And they're not helping themselves by not giving any out to reviewers - an average review is better than no review, all I can assume for now is it's terrible!
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
The Corsair TX650W is around £65 from Novatech:

If the TX650W is too expensive then the OCZ StealthXStream 2 600W is around £52:

You can also get cashback from TopCashBack and Quidco on Novatech purchases.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
If you look at the pictures of the Novatech PowerStation PSUs they look the same as the OCZ ModXStream PSUs.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
New CX series are made by CWT not OCZ, I don't think OCZ actually makes psu's
OCZ's current OEM's are mainly FSP with some CWT and Sirtec
on cap degrading I seem to remember it is 20% per year, but at rated temp so ether 85c or 105c depending on cap ether way it shouldn't be hitting these temps
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
We meant the Novatech PSUs.
Edit: sorry, missed that bit.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
Yes and that's also what I meant, it's probably a rebranded CWT or Sirtech (the OCZ modxstreams are made by them)
Quite often what happens is that the OEM comes up with a new psu design then goes round different "brand" sellers offering it to them. (which is probably what novatech has done, or they've bought up excess stock)
or the seller "brand" company says to the OEM we need a new psu with these features what can you do for us, the OEM then goes through it's current psu list finds the closest match makes a couple of internal component changes to match the required specs/price
the third group is the companies who design, make and sell there own units.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
Yeah, I'll admit it does look like the OCZ one but you don't know if they are using cheaper components or something. Just because it's the same platform doesn't mean it's simply rebadged. And I don't have too much faith in the brand considering that 800w one.
Re: Novatech power supplies - any good
Well as I said I wouldn't trust the 800w one at that price, however the 400w one is obsiously a different make and at a far more sane price.
I think it might well be worth a shot, but then again I always keep a back up psu.
