nForce memory module arrangements....

OK..put your money on whether you reckon this would work....

I have 2 PC's, both nForce 2

2x512 PC2700 in one....
2x256 PC2700 in the other....


I now have 2 more sticks of PC2700...each 256.

WOULD it work to put the following in EACH machine.....

1 stick of 512 in the nearest slot to the CPU....
2 sticks of 256 in the other two....giving me TWO PC's with 1 gig on each...

but WOULD the mobo's work at full speed with that set up...dual channel etc.

(all the above is presuming the mem is compatible)

AFAIK Dual Channel only works with 2x sticks of ram...

i'd say it would work m8 ive done it on a A7N8X mobo.I can't remember which slots i put the sticks in to but it said dual channel on boot up and in cpuz.so i will gamble and say yes it will work for you lol

As long as the 2 matching pair of ram sticks are in the right slots. stick the 3rd stick of ram in and it should still run as dual channel.

You must run the same amount of memory on each channel for it to work in Dual Channel, for example, on the NF7-S the two slots in closest proximity to the cpu-socket are channel 1, the third is channel 2. You would need to run two 256's in the first two slots and a 512 in the third for Dual Channel to be activated meaning the same amount of ram is on each channel.

In other words the way you described would not be dual channel.

Put the two 256s in the slots that are close together, and the 512 in the other one. Should work fine. Running three(or more) DIMMs is a bit of a strain for some motherboards so there's a chance you'll get instability, but at 166MHz you shouldn't have too many problems.

I had 2 x 256Mb & 1 x 512Mb running dual channel on my Soltek nForce 2 mobo. No problems at all.

maynard - was that with 2700 (PC333) memory because I'm fairly sure that most nvidia based boards can only use 3200 (PC400) memory in 2 slots

It was PC3200 memory, but running at PC2700 (166Mhz FSB).

I don't know if that makes a difference.
