The Core i3 2100 is on pre-order at Dabs for around £100.
OTH,these won't be overclockable as they lack an unlocked multiplier and Turbo Boost.

I think they will mostly be about incredible power efficiency and benchmark a little ahead of the previous generation, I think it's a bit mean slashing the L3 cache to 3 MB, and overclocking, bit of a pay more get less deal

The new Core i3 processors are quicker but consume the slightly more power than the previous generation processors:

Re: Intel Sandy Bridge Thread
how does it compare to the old i3 530 cpu?
edit: reading it from same link you gave me. its maybe around 10% faster then previous i3. if it really is priced £100 then i may get it.
febuary 20th its out? why so long?

The new Core i3 2100 does look decent for the price. OTH,a Core i3 530 or 540 can be overclocked quite a decent amount AFAIK and the motherboards are still cheaper ATM and you can use higher voltage RAM too.
It might be advisable to wait for people to upgrade and get yourself a relatively cheap socket 1156 Core i3 530 or 540.
Re: Intel Sandy Bridge Thread
TDP of these new low-end parts is very tasty though.

Power comsumption is actually no better as it seems the chipset consumes more power now!

The Core i3 2100T is supposed to have a 35W TDP but costs more than the Core i3 2100.
The Core i3 2100 is currently on pre-order for around £100 at a few retailers.
Re: Intel Sandy Bridge Thread
I was going to say, i thought they had a sub 40W TDP :P
There is hope for the Pentium being a cheap low power alternative yet then
Edit: The recent spate of low power chips are BS anyway IMO, they're just lower performing. AMD/Intel should be aiming for chips like the Q9550S and so on where performance wasn't sacrificed, even if they did cost more.

Hopefully you don't need to buy a £70 motherboard for a £70 Pentium!!:p
Re: Intel Sandy Bridge Thread
so its best i wait for SB i3's then?
Re: Intel Sandy Bridge Thread
I'm thinking of upgrading to either a 2500K or a 2600K (probably the former). Will I see much of an increase in gaming performance over my current CPU?

How about the more CPU intensive games?
Or would adding an extra GPU be better?
