Re: New DVD drive: no dvds recognised

Yeah, that's not so bad at all. I once spent a week swearing about an AGP card that just wouldn't work, I was messing with it every night, was absolutely sure I'd got it in perfectly, the catch locked and everything.

The night before I took it back (to Maplin, iirc - I was a hardware noob then and didn't know any better ) I figured I'd have one last go, and must have just pushed down a tiny bit harder or at a slightly different angle, and *click*

So as far as I'm concerned there's no shame in having to struggle with the connectors before everything works properly

We've all done silly things like that, nothing to be ashamed of though.

I guess I feel dumb because I suspected that that's what it was from the start but couldn't be bothered testing it till yesterday afternoon.

Re: New DVD drive: no dvds recognised

I've done something far worse than that Nibbler.

Was putting a PC together about 5 years ago, and I had at the time something like 4 IDE hard drives, 2 x 120 gigs, 1 x 160 and 1 x 80 gig drives.

Anyway the mobo I was using had 4 IDE sockets (so basically I could run 8 IDE drives on it) plus it had a further 2 (or could have been 4) sata connectors.

Anyway I merrily connected everything up, and stupidly connected all the drives together, didn't even think to check they were connected to the mobo. I think it was a Gigabyte GA7N400 Pro .

Anyway imagine my surprise when I turn on my new build and I get the post screen, hear the hard drives spin into action and the IDE controller reports proudly that "No drives found"

I was trying all sorts for hours in the bios, at the time it didn't occur to me to even look inside the case and see my school boy error. It was only when I went out for a few hours because I'd lost the will to live (and I'd lost my temper several times) that I noticed what was wrong.

    I felt like such a berk !
