New DVD drive: no dvds recognised

Ok so I got a new DVD drive. The drive gets recognised but the dvds don't. Suggestions?

Re: New DVD drive: no dvds recognised

Tried a different SATA cable? Tried someone else's illicit video collection?
Could try updating/reflashing firmware from manufacturer's site.

Beyond that, I'd just send it back.

    might sound silly but...

check the connections/wires maybe try swapping port...

its rare that you need drivers for a dvd drive but maybe it needs a firmware update..

i presume your testing it with bought dvd's rather than burnt media?

Sigh. It's a cheap OEM one from scan so I'm not sure how firmware etc would get done.

Re: New DVD drive: no dvds recognised

Yup real dvds, nothing works. I don't hear them spin up. Yup definitely not spinning up.
Don't see how it can be a connection issue, it opens and is recognised by windows as a device, but the motor is dead I think. Second dvd drive to break on me recently. WHY!?

    Try running them through PowerDVD?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Sata. I'm almost certain it's the Drive not the connection etc.

Re: New DVD drive: no dvds recognised

I think it's not entirely unusual to get cheap OEM DVD drives where the motor's gone: I had one from ebuyer a few years back. Nothing a quick RMA won't resolve though

    ok furry muff...

try and update the firmware.. (if you can be asked)

find the model number off the drive then do a quick google to see what your find...

before doing all that if i was you i'd try swapping the ports/ check connection.

also a good test is to see if you can eject via windows.... (i bet you cant)

I guess so. I just rang ebuyer and said "this doesn't work" and they gave me an RMA number to write on the packet when I sent it back. Check on their website though: linitx had an online form I had to fill out to request a return (and had to be chased several times to sort out my return: I will *not* be buying from linitx again, tbh....)

    Really?

Linitx were awesome when I dealt with them, offered to test my entire PC at their place even though hardly any of the parts were bought from them. Didn't charge me a penny either when I sent back components that were correctly found to be not faulty.

As for Scan, use their website and log it through there. Then the fun can begin.

Go to your dvd drive and right click it ->Properties -> Region settings and make sure its set to UK (scroll down and click it again to make sure)
Probably wont be your problem, but it only takes a second and is worth a shot
    PC4Free
    I never finish anyt
