I need budget PSU recommendations please!

The PSU fan in my mates computer has started to make annoying noises so basically a new PSU is needed.

It is a FSP400-60GLC which is powering the upgraded PC in this thread:

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardwa...-will-wow.html

ATM,the PC has an E6320,4GB of DDR2,an HD4670 GDDR3 and a pair of hard disks.

The case however has no exhaust fan and requires the PSU do be the same system exhaust. Hence,I am looking for a replacement PSU which uses a ball bearing fan and can run fine at higher temperatures. Even if the system is fully upgraded again in the near future it will not be overclocked.

With Corsair CX400W and OCZ StealthXStream now EOL and the CX430W in this case being not a good choice I am uncertain what PSU to recommend TBH.

The budget is around £40 to £45 including postage.

So far the two PSUs which I have found are the following:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/400w-...-12v-120mm-fan

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/400w-...mm-fan-atx-12v

The Silverpower PSU uses Hitachi and OST capacitors it seems:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/2697/26

I cannot make out what capacitors the Silverstone is using though:

    http://ksstudios.com/silverstone-str...0f-es-400w-psu

Are there any other PSUs which would fit the bill??

Are the Novatech on-brand PSUs any good as they maybe made by OCZ??

I love how you pretend to need out assistance when chosing hardware cat! I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find much of a difference between those PSUs, looks like they'll both do the job.

Other people may know of some deals out there I have missed.

The two EOL PSUs are the ones I used to recommend anyway. The below £40 PSU range in the UK does not look good ATM IMHO.

Scan seems to have OTT postage costs though. £10 postage for a £38 PSU seems excessive TBH.

Re: I need budget PSU recommendations please!

The OCZ StealthXStream II 500W can be had for £45 delivered and the Novatech Power Station 400W can be had for under £35 delivered. If the latter is an OCZ StealthXStream 400W it would be a bargain but I cannot be certain though. There are no reviews of the OCZ PSU so I cannot say what it looks internally and also I cannot find any information whether it is rated at 40C or not.

If my friend is buying the PSU he will have to pay postage though. AFAIK,I cannot use my free postage to send it to him as it would have to be his name on the package. If I can then it would save a lot of trouble.

I don't think he can get deliveries at his work place and if he misses the delivery at home then it is going to be a problem.

Re: I need budget PSU recommendations please!

I have suggested that my mate takes the PSU out and give the fan a good clean first.

He said he won't mind spending upto £50 including postage although if he can spend less the better.

Here are the options I can find ATM:

    1.)Silverstone Tech. Strider SST-ST40F-ES 400W ~ £48 including delivery from Scan

This is also shorter so may fit a bit easier in the case.

2.)Silverpower Green Power SP-SS-400 400W Power Supply ~ £50 including postage from Scan

    This is made by Seasonic.

    3.)OCZ StealthXStream II 500W ~ £45 from Play.com

The 600W version looks good but there seems to be no review of this PSU which I can find.

    4.)Antec High Current Gamer 400W ~ £50 from Ebuyer

    5.) OCZ StealthXStream 400W ~ £43 delivered

It is a CWT unit which has got good reviews

    6.)Thermaltake TR2 RX 550W Modular PSU ~ £50 from Ebuyer

This is modular and rated at 40C.

    7.)OCZ Fatal1ty 550w ~ £47 delivered from Novatech

This is modular but I don't know how good the capacitors are in this PSU.

    8.)Novatech PowerStation Gaming 400W ~ £32 delivered from Novatech

I am only considering this if it is a rebadged OCZ StealthXStream 400W

    9.)FSP Saga II 400W ~ £40 delivered from Novatech

The first five look the best contenders. Reliability,a decent quality PSU fan and high temperature operation are the most important features.

Looks like I can use my free Scan postage after all!

However,I am also checking on the Novatech PSUs too. If I can confirm that they are indeed rebadged OCZ ModXStream units I will let you chaps know!
