    xonar DG crackling help!

Just bought a xonar DG, I am pretty pleased with it so far but it is making like a constant crackling noise in the background. I don't notice it when I am gaming but just idle on desktop or browsing the web it is very irritating.

Is this electro magnetic interference? If so how do I fix it!? Could it be anything else?

    All help appreciated

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

Hmm, I'd only buy a discrete sound card just to avoid these coming from my integrated one, if it still can be there, that's a problem.

Would also like info on this, here's to hoping someone can help

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

A fair amount of discussion about issues like this on the Asus support forums - worth a look :

    http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us

I suggest looking at drivers, checking your power supply is stable (noise could be coming through mains, I had this once from a faulty fridge-freezer) and also that any cabling to peripherals like audio connections, front panels and internal power are secure.

Maybe go into your case and waggle a few things to see if you can replicate the noise.

You don't mention whether whether you have amplified speakers / front panel connectionis if so do some troubleshooting ..... do you get that same noise if you plug headphones straight into the card itself etc

Ultimately you could consider taking the card out and enabling the onboard audio and seeing if you still get trouble.

Good luck with it. I know how annoying this type of thing can be.

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

Thank you for your helpful suggestions Chunkers.

First point that might be important is that when I was watching the football through my 2.0 speakers there was no interference that I noticed (might not of noticed dure to the boringness of the way Man City played ). It was only when I plugged my headphones into the front port that I started to noticed it ... so I will have a fiddle around with that.

It is also interesting what you said about the mains supply because I think the mains supply to this flat is appalling, can't explain why I just hear it make noises and things when I plug stuff in and unplug stuff. I doubt it is the psu because although not a good one it is rated for 600w and 40A on the 12v rail ... from reviews this rating is accurate and I am drawing nowhere near that so the psu should be under minimal strain, ambient temperatures are also low.

With onboard sound I did not have the problem ... does this mean I should ultimately be able to solve the problem? Could it be my PCI slot also, I only have one free one so it would be a real bugger if it was that.

@queelis ... if I fix it i'll be sure to tell you .

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

Right I worked out the three things that seem to cause the crackling... and it is bizarre. When I am on the desktop idle there is no crackling, but if I scroll on my mouse wheel I get crackling. If I mouse my mouse over a hyperlink or some sort of object I also get crackling but if I just move my mouse over nothing I get no crackling. Finally If a program like skype is loading and it has like a spinning animation at the start it kind of crackles in rhythm to the spinning.

It can't just be to do with my mouse because obviously programs loading cause the problem as well ... Does anyone have any idea what on other could be the problem!? This is so weird.

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

I guess the real question is whether this is hardware or power related or software / driver related - I am guessing you are all patched up and with the latest drivers.

I would do some more digging on Asus website as I think it may be a problem encountered by others also.

If you feel brave you could try Asus beta drivers if you can find them, I googled 'Xonar DG beta drivers' and got a few asus links back.

Only other way I can think of that you could try to check if this is software/driver/OS related (rather than hardware) is booting using a 'Live' CD into another OS and see if you encounter any probs under a completely different software / OS.

Not very scientific but might tell you something if it works perfectly under another OS, unfortunately it looks like the DG has limited support under Linux at the moment so you might struggle to find a distro with a live CD that supports it.

Plan B : ebay it and go back to onboard or swap for card with different chipset that will play nicely with your hardware

    Cheers

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

The cracks may be caused by DPC latency spikes, use this tool to check for spikes, especially if they occur at the same time as the cracks you hear.

    Re: xonar DG crackling help!

Thanks for all the help guys, been busy so only just got round to having a good fiddle.

I sorted it out after about 2 minutes. Moving the headphones to the back jack stopped the crackling. I now use my speakers on the front ones when I want to listen to music and when I do that I can't hear the crackling over the music so it is fine. I guess my case isn't properly grounded or something.

Thanks again ... hope that helps you as well queelis.

Arrgh, would not want to use the front for speakers, would have to route the cable aaaaall the way from the back, annoying.

Maybe I'll just get something like this and be done with it
