    Laptop Problem

I was given a laptop to take a look at and it has this very weird problem its an old HP Compaq nc8000 when you power it on the fans rev up screen remains blank stays powered for a few seconds and turns off no beeps or anything, the power led is not on instead the hdd led is constantly green and battery led is orange. I tried running it with no battery just plugged it to the charger still same. I swapped the ram over to the second slot still nothing.

Once it booted up screen came on and it went into windows disk check thing and crashed at 6%. Another time it booted I skipped the disk check and tried logging in but just crashed.
The heatsink is clean no dust.

Also tried using vga on a monitor but didnt work.

See if you can boot from a linux 'live' cd/dvd, such as Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/). If it can, then it suggests there may be a problem with the hdd, which as I can find reviews for the HP Compaq nc8000 as far back as 01/12/2004 wouldn't be too surprising.

    Re: Laptop Problem

Welcome, glad you managed to recover your data files, you can replace a laptop and your software, but unless you have a good backup regime, you cannot just replace your photos, music or docs.

Also pleased to hear that you like the linux environment, I use a 'live' boot disc for all my shopping and banking, as it's essentially on a cd/dvd and stored within your ram, all your personal data is wiped clean once you re-boot which makes it pretty secure.

I agree. No Bios is a bit of a show stopper, but at least you got your data back.
