    AMD CPU's!!

So, people constantly recommend different CPU's out of these 3, but what is best? For gaming and UNI work (Word, internet surfing, excel etc)

    955BE 3.2Ghz x4
    965BE 3.4Ghz x4
    1055T 2.8Ghz x6

    955BE Is around £114
    965BE Is around £130
    1055T is around £140

    Let's see what you think

    Re: AMD CPU's!!

Are you overclocking or not?? The Phenom II X4 has slightly faster cores than the Phenom II X6 as it has more L3 cache per core. OTH,the Phenom II X6 has a more refined memory controller and tends to overclock a bit better IIRC.

    965BE for gaming..

But at uni ePeen is far more important, so get the hex core

    Re: AMD CPU's!!

Don't know when it'll hit retail but if you can wait it might be worth seeing how much the 1065T costs. As far as I can tell it will be available in retail form and has an extra 1/2 multiplier, but will still have a 95W TDP (the 95W 1055T is OEM only)

Wait a short while for Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs. AMD has some catching up to do.

You know what really interested me about that review? It demonstrated just how far we *haven't* come in terms of multithreaded applications. Once they managed to throw some proper thread-loving tests at the processors the Phenom II X6 marched past the i5 2500k, but in the vast majority of tests the i5 walked away with it, demonstrating that most applications and benchmarks are *still* under-utilising anything over 4 cores.

Looks like Sandy Bridge has bumped up mid-range performance nicely though: now it's just going to be a question of platform price as to whether it's worth buying SB or if AMD still provide better value (remembering that an X6 1090T is only £190, and the 1055T is only £140...)

    Re: AMD CPU's!!

I was looking at sandybridge but I cannot see its benefits for me over anything that is already here.

Plus I saw the prices of SB (Sneakiliy) and they are too high for me to be able to justify the costs, especially as my monitor has a max res of 1366 x 768!

AMD will do all I want and more, plus, it gives me the opportunity at the end of the year to look into Bulldozer which is reporting to be a better advancement than SB.

I have never had Intel, always AMD, untill there is a solid reason for me to change I will stick AMD (TBH The i5 2500k nearly had me, but then lost me with its actual RRP)

    So far 1055T Is winning!

    Re: AMD CPU's!!

I voted 1055T because if my budget wasn't a problem this is definitely what I'd go for!

If it was just between the other two I'd go for the 955BE but again it's all down to personal choice.

At your resolution I would probably get a Phenom II X4 840,aka, the Athlon II X4 650. In the US it is cheaper than the X4 645. Alternatively an Athlon II X3 445 or 450 for under £60 should be fine.

Anyway,AMD Bulldozer is supposedly being released in April.

    Re: AMD CPU's!!

How about a 970BE? A little more than the 1055t but clocked at 3.5ghz..

The processors are supported in bulldozer boards though?

So i would rather get a decent cpu that will last me

The AM3+ motherboards are being released in April too AFAIK. TBH, I would try and wait a few months and then you can buy a Bulldozer CPU instead of a Phenom II CPU.

This is why I was suggesting a cheap option in case you need something to tide you over until Bulldozer is released.

AFAIK,the Phenom II X4 970BE and 975BE do overclock a bit better than the earlier Phenom II X4 processors. OTH,it could be a general improvement meaning that even the Phenom II X4 955BE will also do so. TBH,I would get a Phenom II X4 955BE for gaming.

    Re: AMD CPU's!!

I say stick with the 955BE which is still frankly more than enough to cope, and put the money saved into another area of the build.

PS consider smaller cases/pc as you could be moving this pc back and forth a few times (unless you're going to live full time near uni)
Although at the same time an even lower spec system makes some sense as students are big targets for burglary as they tend to have expensive kit like computers (although laptops and other more portable devices tend to be the big targets)
