Need consumer/tech advice with Laptop Issue?

A few days ago I bought a laptop from sainsburys, Medion Akoya P6624, which came with win7 32bit and office starter pack 2010 preinstalled. Wanting to get my full 4gb ram, I then installed 64bit which came on a seperate disc included. It runs fine however I find that office is now missing and is not on any of the recovery discs or backup partitions.

I tried ringing medion but they pretty much said they cant do anything and "will get back to me", pretty sure they cant do anything.

I bought the laptop with the idea that I would not need to buy office 2010. What should I do?

    1. Return it? Well I guess I could but I really needed a laptop for uni right now so I would ideally like to keep it.

    2. I could exchange it, but then how would I install 64bit without wiping out office? ( Is there a way to do this?)

    3. Ask for a mark down in price, from sainsburys? (No doubt they will want proof of the fault)

To me, its like buying a car that can only to 60mph. ( ok maybe not )

    Any ideas???

Although you wiped it out so are to blame in that aspect, I do agree that it should have been provided on CD/DVD. Was it a full licensed copy or just the 3 month trial?

It might be worth asking at your uni, They might have some site licence for it so you can install and use it for free.

I doubt Sainsbury's are going to give you a discount for you wiping it off the laptop - To use your car analogy it is a bit like you buying a car and then scraping it along a wall and asking for a refund or for them to pay for it.

If anyone is to help you it should be Medion.

Re: Need consumer/tech advice with Laptop Issue?

A fair point, but it was advetised as 4gb ram, with office starter pack (not trial but an very basic version of office which had ads)

So either would have to run it at 3gb ram with office?

Or 4gb ram without office? ( unless there is a way)

My point is that the product does not deliver what it says on the box and is misleading.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure the uni can only offer me a discounted price on the software but I will double check

It appears you can download software from the Medion site, Although I'm not sure what.

    www.software4students.co.uk

I use these, they are pretty good and you can download instantly, cheapest place you will find office.

In regards to your question, I have not come across a pre-built machine that has a media disk for bundled promotional software, usually the builder has a special licence which allows them to install a certain version onto the machines.

You could try sending it back and asking them to install it for you and say that you purchased it for office but needed the 4gb of ram, however when you installed to the supplied 64-bit version of windows office was no longer available and could they please try and recover office onto the 64-bit version.

I have phoned them up and they said they would see if it could be recovered from the recovery partition. I then rang today and they said it wasnt possible. I pushed further and he said he would "check again with someone else" basically I think he is giving me the push.

Sainsburys advice was to ring medion. But surely I shouldnt need to contact the manufacturer, (regarding another issue) in the past citizens advice said it was the responsibilty of the retailer to speak with the manufacturer about the problem. However I cant see a non technically minded sainsburys staff member trying to explain the 32 vs 64bit issue.

And thanks for the link but I still dont think its fair that I have to pay another £40-£70 for an office package.

£40 for the ability to do your Uni work is not much of a sacrafice TBH

I don't think they will put it on, they have no obligation to, and they cannot recover it from the recovery partition onto the new OS.

Unless it was sold as "Comes with Microsoft Office and Windows 7 64-Bit" then there is not much they have to do.

Return it and get a different one and don't upgrade untill you can pay £40 for office.

Re: Need consumer/tech advice with Laptop Issue?

If I really had to, I could pay for £40, but still I feel I shouldnt have to.
    Let me explain:

No where did it say it was 32bit installed, the description only said win7 and by defualt any system with 4gb ram 'should' have 64bit OS. Hence why the item is misleading.

But thanks anyway for the advice

I went through this with a laptop I bought last year, got no where, my sony vaio has 4gb ram, as does my sisters Acer, both 32 bit OS.

Re: Need consumer/tech advice with Laptop Issue?

For a free alternative I would use Open Office. I find it far better than Office starter.

In office starter the biggest drawback for me would be the lack of powerpoint, and the fact you cannot create or edit macro's. The ads and the reduced screen width would just be an annoyance.

Have a look on the Medion site and punch in the number on your laptop and see what software is downloadable. I can't look because I don't have a Medion PC to get a number off and have a look.

Re: Need consumer/tech advice with Laptop Issue?

I've just looked at this ms page http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/prod...0_starter.aspx, one of the sections explains what you can and can't do with the starter edition of office 2010, and although it's been a long time since I was a student (my teachers would prob. point out that I never was) I cannot see this version of office being much use to a university student, it just doesn't have the functionality. I would either stump up the cash, or try out the open office mentioned earlier.
