i've got one of those problems that you normally hate people for having

So i've been warming up to building a new system for several months now..since i started my new job in october in fact.

The time has finally come and tomorrow at 1:30pm i'm on my way to go pick it up..but there's a snafu..

Originally i was going with core i5 760 and gigabyte UD4, but they were out of stock..so i thought i'd pony up the extra £30 and go 2500K and asus pro as i was a cat's whisker away from getting the PC yesterday.

But now the 760 and mobo are back in stock, so it's completely my choice and i'm easily swayed by opinion...except everytime i read a 'for' opinion an 'against' is right next to it!

Do I stick with the 760 with it's ease of overclocking, cheaper price and established quality ?
Or do I go with the 2500K with it's still unsure OC ability, but better stats and slightly more future proof ?

A few notes..this rig is pretty much purely for gaming..I'm not a benchmarker I just want to be able to max out games and do whatever (dual 460s and SSDs will take care of that ) for the next couple of years

If there's only £30 difference, and you don't mind the extra outlay, then it makes pure sense to go SB.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

If you have a decent Core i5 2500K you can hit around 4.5GHZ to 4.7GHZ. OTH,there are many people who get between 4.0GHZ to 4.2GHZ.

A Core i5 760 can hit between 3.8GHZ to 4.2GHZ in many cases AFAIK.

Considering that the Core i5 760 runs at 2.8GHZ and the Core i5 2500K runs at 3.3GHZ the overclocking headroom looks almost similar TBH. On Scan the Core i3 760 is nearly £40 cheaper than than the Core i5 2500K.

The Sandy Bridge CPUs are also a bit sensitive to extra voltage an ideally you should keep this below 1.38V as some CPUs have gone kaput. Even,OcUK released an advisory about this.

Sandy Bridge every time, its 10% faster clock for clock (yeah yeah I know it depends on application etc) and might offer more of an upgrade path in the future (1156 is a dead platform now :-( )

another note is i'm not too arsed about OC'ing..i might even not get the K, i figure that by the time the OC'ing would make a difference to day to day usage we'd be several generations ahead and i'd be rich enough to upgrade anyway ha

TurboBoost is so good you don't need to overclock.

Still it not does mean Intel should be charging more for it should they!

Having to pay at least £140 to get Turbo Boost and the ability to overclock a small amount(with the non-K processors) is a ripoff TBH.

The Core i3 processors lack Turbo Boost too.

That doesn't help his cause though. He's willing to spend £XYZ on a CPU, he may as well get the *best* one for his money.

I would probably look at the Core i5 2400 then for around £140 to £150. The main reason I would go for this over a Core i5 760 is its higher clock frequency and lower power consumption.

I am assuming that the motherboards are similarly priced though. If you can get an SLI capable socket 1156 motherboard much cheaper than its socket 1155 equivalent then I would get a Core i5 760.

At the same clockspeeds the Core i5 760 and Core i5 2500K in most games have similar performance:

the mobo price i'm set at around £130-140, it was either the UD4 or the asus pro for the 760 or 2500k respectively

it's for the ports more than anything..1 SSD, 6 2tb drives and a ROM drive..screw it i'm going sandybridge, it's only £30 difference and is slightly better..that's the good thing about dropping 2 grand on a machine, the little things don't mean so much

You do realise that spending the £30 extra on a pair of GTX460 1GB cards will make more difference to gaming than getting a faster CPU??

The additional £30 saved by going for a Core i5 2400 would also mean you could go for the even faster pre-overclocked GTX460 1GB cards.

Dropping the Noctua cooler would mean saving another £50.

TBH,£110 spent on your graphics cards would make more real world difference.

    well, 10..or 9 or so..doing RAID5
it'll be used as the media hub for the home..i was gonna build a NAS box but i figure as i'm at work so much i might as well use this as a NAS, also i never turn my PC off anyway

btw i'm down the road from you (old trafford) and i've not built a PC in 2 years so if i feck it up somehow expect a pecking from me

edit: from what i read the extra frame buffer that 1gb gives is only useful at 2560x1200, am i misinformed ?
i'm going with noctua because i'm living back at my parents (losing jobs sucks) so am in the box room, so the cooler the better

if 1gb makes a difference even at 1920x1200 then i'll switch to those
i'm getting it on 9 months interest free so if i bump em up its no real biggie

    editedit: 1600*
